Hi Everyone,
Just bought a 1995 single-owner 4Runner, MT, with 99k on the odometer. Inside looks like new. All stock, even the radio.
My mech is helping me out:
Installing new front axles, radiator, timing belt, water pump. Nothing unsurprising, but this is putting it back into no issues-condition.

Im curious about the head gasket. This seems like it was a recall item back then. Assuming the head gasket was never done on this, anyone know if Toyo will still honor the recall 30 years later?

Anything else that I should get ready for on these?

How are these guys in off-road conditions when they remain stock?

Welcome. Never heard of these needing a front axle replacement. You should be able to call Toyota corporate with your vin to find out if the head gasket was replaced. As for anything else: Shocks, new springs in the back to get rid of the butt sag. Some lift them and run bigger tires.

 

You might consider a valve adjustment. I don't know what the service manual calls for in terms of interval, but at 161,000 miles mine were all out of spec, especially the exhaust valves. Most troubling was the #6 exhaust. My smallest feeler gauge is .0015" (0.038 mm) and I couldn't get that through. If the exhaust valves don't close, you can burn a valve and damage the head. I breathed a sigh of relief when I was able to get mine back to spec. I actually though my head was a goner!
