2010 head unit swap

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with what I'm looking at. I have a 2010 Trail Edition and recently swapped a regular OEM head unit back into it (the previous owner had a horrible android-based thing that I promptly got rid of). Mine came equipped with 8 speakers and is obviously non-JBL. I know that in 2010, you could option the Trail Edition with a Navigation / JBL head unit and I'm wondering if I could swap one of those into mine without issues. Even though I only have 8 speakers, will it send audio correctly to the speakers I do have, even though the JBL head units were matched with 15 (I think) speakers? My 4Runner also has a shark fin antenna in addition to the regular antenna on the fender, so was mine wired for navigation from the factory, and just needs a head unit to utilize this? Attaching front/back pics of the kind of regular, base head unit I have now, and a head unit I'd swap in if I found one to try. In the backside pics, the base unit is on the left, the JBL/Nav unit is on the right. Has anyone tried this?

 

You can swap the OEM head unit from your 2010 to the new 9 inch unit that comes in 2020+ 4runner.
The head unit will run you about $900 - 1000 and the harness is about USD250. It's plug and play.
All your speakers will work, so will navigation and XM. It can also be hooked to work with front and rear camera. Comes with android auto and car play. For in dash navigation you will add a $10 antenna on the back.
Alot of members, me including have done this swap in our 2010-2013 to retain the OEM look but still have a somewhat modern unit.

 

Well that brings up another question then. I have *this* unit laying around too, from a 2014 I think... I tried using it, but obviously my harness doesn't have the same connections that this one needs. is there a harness I could buy to adapt it then?

JBL cannot go into a non JBL runner. Why? The JBL system uses a separate amp to power all the speakers which you do not have.

 

It's a hard knock life, lol. Oh well, I may eventually try to make it work with adapters and such but until then, base unit gives me bluetooth for tunes and my Garmin / iPhone get the navigation done just fine. Thank you for the help everyone!

 

Just with with a decent aftermarket deck from Crutchfield or Trailgrid Pro. The later runners can swap to the newer entune units but I’m not sure about the earlier ones. Toyota loves changing wiring.

 

I swapped the head unit from my 2011 SR5 to a 2022 SR5P non JBL. Plug and play with the custom harness.

 

I wasn’t sure if there was a similar harness available for the earlier years but I know AutoHarnessHouse makes a entune 2.0 to 3.0 for my 19.

 

I got in touch with him and he managed to make one to fit the 2011 harness. The only difference is the camera connector on mine is 16 pin as opposed to the 24 pin in the 2014+ models. Ofcourse, for navigation an external GPS antenna with a SMB connector is needed. Everything works other than rear view camera since I did not have one from factory and I am lazy to install one.

 

In your case I would get a Gentex mirror that doubles as a rear cam screen like the new models.

 

I do have a rear camera and I'd love a bigger screen than the postage-stamp size one in the rear view mirror, especially when off-road, but my Garmin also has a rear camera that (usually) works (mostly). So even though I have the shark fin antenna, I'd still need an external added antenna for it?

 

This looks promising. How does it pick up the rear camera feed? Or I will still have to install a rear view camera and connect it to this?

 

Having a shark fin is one thing, having wires connected from it into the factory harness is something else.

 

I’d say a camera harness for an aftermarket headunit (just the camera interface) but then you will need a trigger for it. An aftermarket radio harness gives you a trigger but I’m not sure where it would be in the OEM harness. Maybe you can get it from the kick panel.

 

I am going to read a little bit more into this. I want a backup camera that comes on when I select R and not really a rear view camera.
The only way to do this is to remove the tail gate trim, squeeze it into the OEM location ( below the 4runner letters) , route the wires out of the tail gate wiring cover and route it to the front stripping half the plastic panels on the passenger side and then into the back of the head unit. Since I already have the backup camera harness installed in my new heat unit, I just have to connect the camera harness to it after routing it. Routing being the operative word.

 

I went looking and it may be possible to do it with the Anytime Backup cam with your own camera if you aren't looking for a backup to come on in reverse.
