Why does the oem cargo tray suck so much?

The "All Weather Floor Liners/Cargo Tray" were an optional add on in my new SR5. It came that way and I didn't have a choice for a steep $309. The floor mats are a nice rubber material and fine. The cargo tray is a flimsy plastic shell, for lack of a better word, and it scratches the cargo area plastic sides like crazy. It has a lip all around it to keep liquid contained, which is nice I guess. It slides around a bit so I put some Velcro on the bottom to hold it in place. Is this really the best Toyota offers OEM? I was imagining something more like the floor mats in a thick heavy rubber material. Guess I need to look aftermarket for something better. Any suggestions?

WeatherTech has worked fine for me. You can see it compared to the OEM in this photo. It's definitely a softer, more rubbery feel instead of plastic.
(PS- before anyone comments on the missile/ decapitator...(tow hitch), that is not where I store it when driving.:p)

    Never buy OEM floor mats.

Those things are trash and always feel like an after thought.

Agreed. Unfortunately they already came with my 4Runner.
