Its not mine but I dont want to start a "missed connections" thread. At Yosemite this week and stumbled across in the Village. If you're on here, you've got a badass rig!20240627_103127.jpg

Gorgeous! Years ago, on a motorcycle road trip to Colorado, some buddies and I rode up to the end of Lamoille Canyon on our way through Nevada. Incredible scenery up there.

Same mountain range, only about 30 miles (in a straight line) south of Lamoille. Neat thing is, that mountain range is criss-crossed with 2-track roads. You can spend a month up there exploring them all on a dirt bike/quad/side by side.

That's got to be a total pain in the butt when it comes to overpasses and parking garages. But it looks cool!

So, how tight are you supposed to turn in 4H?

I try to make my turns as wide possible so I don't bind even though this forest is all loose sand so I know binding isn't really an issue. However I am still conservative with turning.

Taken at the beautiful Pine Barrens of NJ and got locally grown blueberries, best ever!

The Toroweap Overlook on the North Rim of Grand Canyon NP in Arizona. A day use permit is needed from recreation.gov. It’s a 61 mile dirt road via the Sunshine Route from AZ 389 down Antelope Valley Road. It look 2 hours to drive the mostly well-graded ~60 mile dirt section, then one hour to crawl the last rocky 2.7 miles in 4LO. It was a nice challenge and a long hot day out and back but the scenery is quite the payoff. It’s the only viewpoint overlook where you have a vertical view of the Colorado River, which is 3000 feet below. Saw no one else the whole day except a truck arriving as we were departing.

I was there 10-ish yrs ago in a '96 Silverado, and the road was a washboard the whole way. Going 20 mph was a treat. The 1st sand bog almost got me, but I made it out. At 2nd sand bog, I went in at 30 mph and came out doing 5 mph and throwing 15 ft rooster tails. Absolutely the worst ride of my life. My truck hated me. Wish I had known about airing down back then. The view was worth it.

This is what Toroweep looks like from below. I pointed so that I would remember that this pic is the lookout.

There are three routes to Toroweap. The “Sunshine Route” is pretty well graded now, pretty nice if you air down and in spots you can go 30-40 mph. But keep on the lookout for rocks and cattle guards. The other two routes are not recommended in wet weather because they’re sandy and/or mud prone spots. In fact on the return trip we drove the other route to Colorado City AZ, and there were a couple of sketchy low lying sandy spots due to recent rain. I can see where they would be real nasty when wet. I picked up a lot of red sand-mud as it was and it was pretty dry due to the several days of 95-100°F. temperatures.

You say, "Day 1", which might imply there are more days or photos to follow. If so, consider making a thread in the "Trip Reports" subforum. It's a great place to have all your shots from one adventure in an easy to find place. And nice photo, is that near Bridgeport? Trying to think of all the areas where creeks come up to the highway.

Was able to get out and check road conditions in the Stampede Pass area. One tiny patch of blue sky, so it was "officially" a clear day in Seattle! :rain:

Thanks. If I get enough good pics I’ll make a trip report. But per your question, this is the upper Owens, 5 ish miles off the highway. Not a secret place by any means.
Day 2 was hot creek. Also not a secret place.

I'm always more worried about rodents than a dead battery when I go on a backpacking trip.

It used to be a blast swimming in Hot Creek many years ago until a few geysers erupted in the creek. Since then it’s been fenced off.
