I've noticed a few times on a steep incline that when the 4runner rolls backwards it almost sounds like the ATRAC or Crawl Control is kicking in. A popping sound similar to what ATRAC or Crawl Control sounds like when activated. Is this a common deal with the 4Runner ORP? Definitely sounds like braking taking place.

HAC is working. Hill-Start Assist Control. For whatever reason it’s not programmed to hold the vehicle and instead just pulses the brakes to keep you from rolling fast and it only lasts like 10 seconds.

Is kind of alarming the first time it happens, then once you know what it is no big deal.

Thanks for the clarification. It was a little unsettling the first time it happened, but I've watched enough uTube videos and listened to the listened to the noises these 4runners make and figured that was probably what it was. Just wanted to clarify with the folks that have more knowledge on the 4runner than me. It's my first experience with a 4runner and so far I'm really liking it. Took a little highway trip today running 70 to 80 on I-20 and averaged 18.6 mpg. Better than I expected.
