Most definitely not just white. I have the silver and it chipped pretty bad on the front bumper and hood not long after I bought it.

I wouldn't say the 4Runner cameras are great by any means, but they're not terrible either.

I recently rode in a family members 2020 Ford Explorer ST. It had a lot more tech incorporated and my 2018 4Runner camera is notably better.

To keep it paint related, my white paint is great. Park it outside, wash it once a month. Wax it once a year.

A few chips here and there but I bought an offroad truck, not a show truck.

The camera problem seems to only be those with MTM option. We paid more for an option that set us back 15 years. People without MTM seem satisfied with the cameras. I'd be happy to give up the crappy MTM to get decent resolution.

Paint went to crap after they took the lead out of it.

I decided to try PPF for the first time. I had the entire front end of the 4R done (including headlights) in the hope that it would reduce the chance of chipping from road debris. Only time will tell but since this is a vehicle I anticipate keeping for a very long time I thought it was worth trying. Even if it delays the yellowing of the head lights that would be a plus!

Have a 2024 dark gray forerunner having major chipping and scratching issues with it. The paint appears to be extremely thin and it looks like the undercoats not holding on to the base material. Does anyone know whether a class action suit on these vehicles is going forward?

My 2022 4Runner has the worst paint of any vehicle I've ever owned. I've had to touch up more rock chips in 35,000km (21k miles) than any other car I've owned in my life (including my previous Camry and Taurus both of which had about 170,000km when traded). Seems like every time I take it on the highway I find a new chip.

It also got covered in clear-coat micro-scratches/swirls from the one time the dealer washed it by hand.

Then if you look on the door sill area where your leg rubs getting in and out of the truck the paint has worn down to the bare metal. I don't know what Toyota was thinking in this area, my work F-150 has plastic all for this area preventing this from happening.

Love the vehicle overall but this paint is awful.

Wonder if this is a covid erra paint thing. Seems a lot people that notice their paint chipping scratching easy have later year 5th gens. I had a 2007 camy I drove for 11 years and it litterly had less chips than my 2023 4runner

As noted in an earlier post, I had the front clip wrapped with PFF. I'm quickly becoming a believer. On a recent excursion on a black diamond trail near Lake Arrowhead the trail narrowed and I was compelled to drag the 4R through a narrow stretch of of the trail lined with bushes. The front fenders came through without a mark while the rest of the rig was pinstriped with scratches. Thankfully after a lot of polishing compound and they are mostly gone but I'm extremely impressed with the PPF and considering doing the rest of the sides before it's too late.

Yes. Im thinking in a few months once my cash reserves have replenished I may do PPF to at least the hood and front bumper

For anyone not thinking lifer with this vehicle… will you get sufficient roi for whatever ppf costs?
Isn’t 4R’s market value benchmarked against the vast majority of used 4Rs without meticulous investment into paint protection?

meaning chips here and there won’t dent resale value.

why invest in paint upkeep for the next owner?

I always enjoyed keeping pristine paint, I always take my cars to touchless washes to avoid swirls. Love waxing it all up to look pretty. Especially during the vehicle honeymoon. It’s more a matter of feeling good for taking care of it. Never liked PPF, because it’s covering up what you want to make shiny and perfect. The occasional chip bothers me way less than seeing/feeling the slight texture change of PPF on half the car. The other thing is that I’d worry about the paint looking unmatched for whenever the special day comes that you decide to take it off. If it ever comes off.

The 4runner has turned into a different breed though. I had the honeymoon, but I find it looks better kinda dirty. I still constantly keep it clean, but mostly focus on underbody and functional cleanliness, not paint. I still cry inside a little whenever I get new pinstripes, but if they look like it they will buff, I don’t worry too much about it, unless the pinstripe looks very bad or out of place lol.

I don’t think I’d be this cold-hearted towards my paint if it wasn’t a lifer vehicle. Also, lack of perfect paint has been a fair trade for the fun times a 4runner can give you off road.

Good point. My recent T4R trade in the dealership didn’t give a sh!t how good of condition it was in. Just tried to give the least trade in value possible

Yep! Traded our Sienna in, with door dings, body shop replaced a crashed in sliding door.. none of that mattered… gave us good trade in value.
