Anyone else get knocking with 87 octane?

When there used to only be about .15 cents to 20 cents difference in grades I would fill up with 91 for the long trip uphill (AZ) and then back to 87 for the trip home. Don't know if it made a difference but definitely no knocking. I have only run a few tanks of 91-93 in our current 4Runner.

I run California 87 on my 2001 and 2018. No knocks.

 

Yeah 10 lbs doesn't sound like much I'll agree with that.
Considering people do a full exhaust and intake for no torque increase at all I thought it was interesting at least.

Once tuned, and using high octane. You're looking at 30 foot pound of torque increase at 2,250 RPM. (Compared to low octane and stock tune)
Which is significant imo.

 

I haven’t had any knocking issue with my 4Runner but my 2nd gen Tacoma does. It started when it was around a year old in hot weather. The dealer did a reflash as part of a TSB but it didn’t help much. Since then I have had to run 89 octane fuel. What a waste of money. Can I send Toyota the bill for the extra fuel costs? It’s probably $4-5K extra.

 

You are the one wasting money, your truck won't explode running 87 cmon man

 

If it's predetonating for any reason you'll run the risk of cracking ringlands, damaging pistons, bending rods, even cracking heads or valve seat failure.

It shouldn't be ignored.

Cmon it's not knocking constantly that would be an entirely different issue.

I don't know man if my engine started to predetonate for any reason I'd be running high octane from then on xD

I've spoke to a few people on this forum who have had similar situations and just run high octane now.
Running mid/ high octane is a better solution than replacing the engine...

Top tier fuel vs least additive concentrate fuel. More detergents vs more octane may be more beneficial. I personally run 93 just because.

 

Top tier always! Costco is a double win because it's TT and usually priced lower. Otherwise I try to stick with Shell when I can.

 

I bet half the guys here don't even know what a knock really sounds like.

WaWa from Valero refinery gas 87 in 2008 & 2012 FJ's, 2015 Tacoma, 2018 4R TR OR & in 2023 4r TRD Pro never an issue for me.

 

Costco gas has only been Top Tier for about 10 years. I get a tank at Costco every time we are in a city with a Costco. Chevron is always my top choice but none in KY.

I fill with Costco premium all my cars most of the time, because it is one of the few places where you still get ethanol-free gas where I live.
