So the other day my passenger side map light was really dim when opening and closing the door. I clicked the lamp a few times and it started working. This AM it stopped working and while clicking both the driver and passenger side both stopped working for a few seconds. Now I’m back to just the passenger side not working. Anyone else have this issue before? These are stock LED bulbs that came on the vehicle. My first thought is that the bulb on the passenger side is bad and that it affects the driver side as well.

At present only my driver side map lamp is working. Additionally, not that it should have any effect but the extreme hot weather coincided with this. Any advice would be appreciated. I’m sure this would be covered under the original factory warranty.

Dealer. Vehicle's too new to have issues like this.

I’m at the dealership now. I read about the software hack that has paralyzed Ford, Stellantis, etc. Well, it’s affecting Toyota too. Having to fill out paperwork the old fashion way. I diagnosed it as the passenger LED map lamp. I may have gotten confused when I was clicking the driver side lamp. Plus the time out feature is probably what turned my driver side lamp off. Will update after I’m done here.

IMG_1767.jpg Does anyone know if the 2023 TRD Pro came with LED Map lights? I bought mine used with 1700 miles and I’m be told that the LED map lights were aftermarket. They were going to put the old halogen bulb in and I told them not to bother. Additionally, My vanity light behind the passenger visor isn’t working. The dealership wants to drop the liner and check the wiring. I didn’t leave my vehicle because I just didn’t feel comfortable at this point.

I was of the understanding that you bought this vehicle new...if purchased used, and you're having issues with the LED interior lights, no telling what the previous owner did. I don't believe any year models came from the factory with LED interior lighting, but I've been wrong before.

This may be a case of inferior LED bulbs. You might want to look into a dependable LED interior light set, like Diode Dynamics. If you do have the old halogen bulb, you could put it back in and see if the light works properly again.

Thanks for the quick response. I’m waiting to hear back from Ruspro17 as to whether or not his TRD Pro came with LED interior lights. I sure hope that’s the issue. Toyota will probably try and hit me with $180 diagnosis charge ….lol. If these are indeed aftermarket lighting.

A lot of times if someone try’s to add cheap leds this could be the problem. I have Fyre flys and no issues.

No models of the 4runner come with stock LED's in the interior. Previous owner installed them most likely and it could just be a bad bulb. Install oem halogen bulbs and see if the issue rectifies itself. Cheap aftermarket led's have been known to cause a short in the body ecu as well, if that's the case that's a significantly more expensive repair.

There is a led option if you got them when you bought your 4runner new. There is a good chance it just a bad bulb. I had one go out in my 20 Pro and put an another one in no problem.

It is a gulf state distributor option not factory. Big difference. My dealership wont and doesn't offer led interior lights because they have a history of causing problems in systems not designed to support them.

LOL I am not angry and you are correct they are port installed options which is still different then Gulf State Distributor (which is really just a group of dealers) and the dealers that are part of that distributor network warranty those add ons whereas Toyota themselves warranty the Pro add ons. Two different animals but similar. Don't believe me call Toyota corporate and ask them to warranty led interior lights on a 4runner and they will tell you that they don't offer led interior lights as a factory option and thus there is no warranty from them.

I'm occasionally tempted to try some interior LEDs since the dark interior greedily devours all light. However, there are about 100 posts on this forum about problems with aftermarket LEDs for every one about OEM lights. I may still experiment, but I'll do so with the expectation that any benefit may be hard-won and temporary.

I use Meso Customs interior LED's and have had zero issues but they are not cheap and they are hard to get because they go out of stock so quickly. I used them on my previous Tacoma as well. I also disconnect the battery while installing so I don't short anything out and cause any problems.

Yeah, I've noticed that whenever somebody posts that Meso lights are in stock, the next post usually says they're all gone.

many of the 4runners on my dealer's lot had the $199 LED Upgrade installed at the port...
Mine did not, Freeman toyota would/could add any option I wanted...but said they couldn't do the LED upgrades

I almost bought the diode dynamics $150 kit, but couldn't bring myself to pay shipping and sales tax on lights
I've been looking for MESO customs in stock to buy some, got a tip from another poster that 4runnerlifestyle has some...but have heard bad things about that site

maybe I won't put LEDs in after all, I got some LED custom door lights already....

If one purchases LEDs from Amazon or Ebay... Well... That's usually when the crying starts.

I installed the diode dynamics kit in mine three years ago. Absolutely no issues. Map lights too, and also puddle lights and tailgate area illumination. Massive difference for me since my eyes are getting dimmer with age.

I think this statement is 100% correct (except I think they are Gulf State not Gulf Stream) and summed up everything that I learned yesterday. My dealership said that they are covered and not only under the factory 3 year/ 36 warranty but since I got the 10 year/ 100K they would continue to be warrantied. The problem for him is finding a part number because they are not factory parts…. He said they run into this problem all the time in the body shop with stuff that’s installed at the port. The good news is, I’m covered. My initial fear is that the previous owner had done it which the service guy was talking about how it could void my warranty especially if they have to drop the headliner and check wiring, etc. Then hearing about blown ECUs etc $$$…ouch!!!! The main thing is my butt is covered for now.

I don’t want to wear you folks out. I will do a final post when everything is resolved.

****Update**** Diode Dynamics to the rescue. Fingers crossed but all lights are currently working as they should. I believe the problem was a bad LED bulb on the passenger vanity mirror light. It would not come on at all but did have an effect on both the map lights. I replaced all 4 in about 15 minutes w/ Diode Dynamic LED bulbs and at present everything is working great. Meanwhile Toyota with the CDK hack can’t even figure out the P/Ns for the bulbs they had installed at the port. If these work with no problems, I will gladly eat the cost. I did not want to leave my truck at the dealership to be worked on….

Southeast Toyota and Gulf States Toyota regions will have port-installed options that are not available in any other regions. LED interior lights, full coverage PPF, XP Predator package, etc.
