What have you done to your 5th Gen 4Runner today?

I finally got around to finishing my slider install. I picked up some barely-used RSG sliders (DOM, grip top plate) from a member last month. They needed a bit of superficial rust/paint cleanup (POR15 with Rustoleum finish coat). I also picked up a fresh set of mounting hardware from RSG since it was short a couple bolts.

Installation went slow. I did it by myself and started with the jackstand method, which I quickly abandoned because it didn't give good, balanced support. What worked much better was a small cardbord box on one side and a Badland floor lift on the other.

I thought I was home free after getting a bolt in on each end, but I had problems with the parking brake cables on both sides. On driver's side, I didn't notice until putting in the last bolt that the clamp had partially opened, and half of it was trapped behind the slider. I had to unscrew the other 11 bolts nearly all the way and lever the slider away from the frame to wrestle it loose. Then I coerced the bracket back into shape with vise grips and finished that side.

On the passenger side, the parking brake cable had so little slack that I couldn't get the bolt in straight and I cross-threaded it because I couldn't see that it still wasn't quite straight. I backed it out and chase the hole again and got it in with a replacement bolt. Although it was tedious, I'm glad I didn't use an impact wrench, or I might have wrecked more bolts.

Finally, several of the upper bolts just aren't reachable with a socket due to interference from the body. I suspect I didn't get a full set from the seller because he never got them all in. A ratcheting box end was critical to install those. The supports for the sliders limit how many degrees you can turn in one stroke. I counted close to 400 strokes to get the worst one in. It would have been unbearable with standard box end.

 

My observation from the first drive is that adding 120 pounds that far below the center of gravity reduces the body roll by more than I expected.
