I was driving home my 2001 4runner when I notice the temperature gauge going above normal operating temperatures. By the time I got home it was in the Red and I immediately shut off the car, took pics and a video. I don't know what it could be but some people suggested it was the Thermostat being faulty and not opening at operating temperature. I'm not sure what's wrong but going to be taking off the skid plate and looking under the vehicle right now.

Could be a stuck Thermostat. I would also have a look at the water pump. Just because the coolant is leaking around the T-stat does not necessarily mean that is the problem. If your water pump is bad the engine temperature will climb, heating up the coolant. The coolant then finds a place to escape.

I would definitely take a look at the water pump.
