Hi all. I have a 2002 4Runner 4x4. There is this loud creaking noise when steering. The car will do it when not running. I can’t exactly pinpoint the noise. I did notice when turning the steering rack shifts side to side about a half inch. Could bad steering rack bushings cause this noise?

*edit - it does not make the noise when front end is jacked up in the air

It could be a few different things steering shaft, ball joints, tie rod ends.

Steering rack should NOT shift like that. Replace those bushings.

Thanks for the replies! I am going to tackle the LBJs, tie rod ends, and steering shaft bushings next!
