Lifted my hood today for an oil change, and the coolant cap was off

I was probably driving at least 3,000 miles on it with the coolant cap off. it doesn’t seem like it fits on the reservoir too securely. is this just a bad design or is something else wrong ? TIA

Doesn't sound normal. Never heard about this before.

The coolant cap should definitely never wiggle loose on a Gen 5. I’d look at the fittings on the side of the cap and see if one is bent. If so, replace it. Same with the reservoir. Also, you may want to pump out some of the coolant to see if any bugs got into it. If so, flush and change.

I assume the OP meant the reservoir cap since you'd have to remove plastic to even see the radiator cap. However, I agree with the suggestion.

The reservoir cap can be lose and can pop off, no worries. There is no gasket there.
The radiator cap should not be dangling around. It's a maintenance item and should be changed depending upon its condition.

@joemarshall, who was the last person to touch your cap prior to this recent discovery?

Things like this always bring to mind careless maintenance people. I took a Jeep I bought to a Toyota dealer for service, and several months after the last time I picked it up I discovered the oil fill cap sitting on the wheel well next to the battery...I did not return to that dealer for any more service.

WOW, you're lucky they remembered to even put oil in it...
