Borrowing a phrase from my mates down under, I had second thoughts on my use for the rack mounts. I can get away with a 2M 12" whip, but the other mount would be surely overburdened. I took the trunk lip mount off my 2005 Pontiac GP I had since new (trade in), and I heated the base plate with a torch to bend the tabs back so to have a flat plate. Then I heated the steel plate and bent it to fit the curve of the cross braces, added some rubber tire tube and used hose clamps to bind it down. I think it looks better than the other mounts and by far much stronger.
