My guess is that it has to do with functions that time out after a given period while in Accessory mode (such as radio, interior lights, and power to the 12V and USB), along with the inability of most functions to operate with the engine off altogether (especially power outlets).

As I recall, there isn't much about those you can control with settings. The vehicle doesn't want to let you drain the battery.

I don't see how anyone could hate the FOB unless it's battery is weak.

There are very good reasons to hate the FOB. One of the reasons is that the FOB can leave you stranded without being able to unlock the vehicle if certain buttons are pressed in the right sequence. Trying to adjust the volume of the beep the truck sounds acknowledging the signal from the FOB. There are several threads devoted to this issue.

Also, some people prefer the reliability of a simple thin, mechanical key, and the big, bulbous fob uses too much pocket space. At least it's better than a rental car, where you're stuck with two fobs chained together the whole time.

I prefer the key myself. I have rented the push button start 4Runner on several occasions, so I have experience with both. I prefer the key. There are also concerns about the ease of theft of the vehicle with the FOB. No thanks.

You do know that the FOB contains a physical key to unlock the doors if needed?
The rest are 3rd world problems.

I forgot about that, probably because mine does not have push button start, and neither does my 2nd Gen Tacoma.

If you're worried about theft because of the the fob, don't use it to lock your doors. Just physically push the lock button on the door as you do now. To unlock your door(s), just touch a front door handle.
