Picking up a 2024 4Runner tomorrow? Key Fob question.

Most likely I will be buying a new 2024 4Runner tomorrow. I was already prepared knowing that I would be getting only 1 key fob.

How long did it take any recent 4Runner purchasers to receive your 2nd key fob from Toyota?

Anyone find an aftermarket key fob to purchase as a backup? Amazon?

 

I got both keys on the same day I bought my SloRunner. That chip shortage crap doesn't apply anymore. There's a very good chance you'll get both keys before you leave.

 

I got my 2024 on May 25, mine came with TWO key fobs, and dealer never mentioned it only coming with one fob

What kinda 4Runner are you getting? I thought they all used the same type keys...

SR5 because I am a cheap old bastard.

 

It shouldn't matter if it's a SR5 or a Pro model, it should come with 2 key fobs.

Did the salesman tell you this? If you actually only get one fob at delivery, you'll get the second fob free....later. Ask the salesman "When?"
Fobs and programming are expensive.

 

How is that shell? I've been wanting to get one but saw on some reviews that the blade is tough to get out or doesn't sit right.

 

After I choked down the $41 price tag, its OK...good actually

When I first got it together, the blade wouldn't go in.
I loosened all 4 screws, and kinda wiggled the pieces...so they would find their natural resting point

the blade slid right in, but would not lock...
I loosened up the top two screws just a little and used my fingernail to nudge the key retainer then tightened the screws back up

it works fine now

Only thing I don't like,
I got a lunar rock case, and the black on the factory key blade kinda detracts from overall appearance

If I get another one for the extra key, I would get black...

If you order from the AJT website, you can pick screw color and red or black buttons.
I ordered from Amazon and got it the next day, Amazon package ships with only black screws, but you do get a red AND black panic button

 

I like the contrast. Black & Red look good together. I wouldn't want it uni-color.

It's red, but it has faded. Plus the flash of my camera phone makes it look pink-ish.

but I think the guy that sold you that 'red' key fob, might have lied to you...

 

Nah, it was a much darker red when I first bought it. I never paid much attention about the color fading, until now (thanks for the ball breaking - you jerks). When or If I get around to it, I'll hit it with a rattle can to make it dark red again, or black.


Edit: I took two new pictures, with/without flash and on a different back ground. Now the key doesn't look pink at all. So........Fuck Y'ALL!

 

I just bought my '23 SR5 two weeks ago and it came with 2 fobs.

 

All the cars I have bought the dealership gave me two.

 

Bought a 24 in Feb came with (2) keys

 

Bought a 2024 ORP in April - It came with 2 fobs. Still not used to the smart key thing - I've been starting vehicles by turning a key for almost 60 years.

Only problem I ever had with keys is when I bought my 2017. They couldn't find the second key and ordered a replacement.

 

You can take a file or sandpaper to the key and sneak up on the fit. I just had to give a few passes and now mine fits very snugly without any play, but also without any fighting to get it to seat. You want it tight if you actually use the key ring.. too loose and it might detach if bumped.


@NeverTooLate71 if they only give you one fob, make sure that they owe you a second is in the appropriate document. DO NOT take their word because one doc you sigh will be the "we have provided everything" sheet.

 

There was a stretch during the big chip shortage when they were delivering one at purchase and the second much later. That ended most places in the Spring of '23, although there were isolated reports of it happening later.

 

My dealer said there was only one key. I responded that was unacceptable and the next day there were two keys.

 

I received both keys with my purchase yesterday.

 

We are experts at ball breaking!! It's what we do.

 

Last week my daughter bought a new 2025 Lexus NX350 and it only came with 1 fob . They said it’s a chip shortage thing and that she’ll get a second one when they come in .

 

I'm pretty sure they could all come with 2 fobs. It all just depends on how much of a dick a dealer wants to be.

 

Picked up my new 2024 4Runner and got both key fobs! Man, I've been grinning from ear to ear all day! Happy Fathers Day to Me!

No, the point is Toyota is most likely back to 2 key fobs at purchase.

 

My 23 only came with one fob, dealer wanted $500 for the second.
