Our other gentlemen seemed to follow the conversation just fine.

I'd say it was more brief that vague though bud. Sorry I didn't give you the whole replay

I mentioned it was about 3ft deep. My spinning tires sloshed water up to the intake. Obviously I'm not wanting to cross a river 7ft deep, but I'll take an elevated intake point to prevent this again.

I'll bite though. How does a snorkel filter dust and sand more than a factory intake? Compared to elevating the point at which air is taken in deep water

It's a joke, based on a movie, and in the movie there is a scene about warranties. Tommy Boy. It's actually not even that funny, but for some reason it came to mind so I posted it.

It doesn't. The raised portion of the snorkel is higher than most of the dust generated while driving, or it is elevated enough to not take in "thicker" dust. That's all.

Noted. What's the best bet for preventing water intake to the engine then?

A snorkel does both, it raises the intake (obviously), which provides cleaner air and you're less likely to have water intrusion. That being said, water can enter from other places if the airbox isn't sealed, or you can have other issues (electrical, water in diffs, trans/t-case, etc.) when the water is deep enough.

As an example, and this may not be the best example, but your radiator or cooling fans can "spray" the top of the engine with water as they work like a propeller. The water hits the fans and the fan throws the water everywhere. This may not be a good example with the 4Runner (it's tight in there), but it is with plenty of other vehicles. You want to make sure your electrical connections are water tight, possibly using dialectic grease in areas that may get wet.

Find a low mileage used engine from a wreck and a reputable local mechanic. Some salvage yards give 2 year parts and labor warranty.

    Dealers will rape you.

Does bro have selective reading? What part of spinning my wheels sloshed water up.... (FOR MORE INFORMATION FOR YA Jynarik) I spent 2 hours trying to dig myself out of the mud with all my recovery gear. The only reason I couldnt get out was because i didnt have an anchor point for the winch. It was dark, i was sending rooster tails of mud and water 10+ft in the air. Shit was everywhere.... you talk like I dipped one wheel in the water and my engine just grenaded itself. You weren't there.

I've got a friend that works at the service dept. at the local Toyota dealership. He was my second opinion. I've already changed dif fluids, checked on electrical, cleaned up the rig. Changed oil, air filters, cleaned up the intake.

I only wanted an opinion from toyota specialist. I'd never let the dealership actually do the work due to raping prices

You don’t “slosh” water into your intake from being stuck in 3ft of mud

Well maybe in a foot of mud covered by two feet of muddy water. If the mud is deeper than that, the frame will bottom out. It's nearly impossible to sink a vehicle more than frame-deep in mud.

I love how this dude just wants to be right and a dick rather than help. From the guy with a snorkel on his rig. Maybe I don't know everything but I'm not stupid. I know milky/glittery oil and a hard knock when I see it.

Maybe it just shelled out for no reason and I wanted info on doing a swap or replace. The mud is irrelevant.

He probably bought his wife a jeep

Yeah happened to a buddy in my off-road club charging through just frame deep water. Luckily the only casualty was a muddy air filter. Picked up a replacement filter and all was good.

Snorkels for driving in the desert usually have a cyclone or other type of prefilter at the inlet. When I vacationed in Egypt, many vans and minibuses had snorkels just for driving on paved roads in the desert. The snorkel in this application prevents the air filter from getting plugged up by sand too quickly.

The fine print I read is on their warranty FAQ page.

The exclusions specifically list "off road use." So to retain your warranty you'd have to lie about off road use...

There is a laundry list of things to do/ prove if OP needed to utilize the warranty.
-Register your remanufactured engine for their warranty before installation
-Coolers and intake were cleaned before installation
-Initial start up and break in procedure were followed
-Prove normal maintenance was done and "improper maintenance" was not.

This is all standard industry stuff.

Just trying to help OP and make sure he reads through the warranty agreement if he wants to retain it. Like I said, I'd rock a Powetrain Products Engine all day. They are one of the industry leaders for remanufacturing. But there are some details to keep in mind if he decides to move forward with a remanufactured engine.

An LS would be cool, better power and probably better fuel economy. But it would only make sense if there already a well engineered retrofit kit available. Having to figure everything yourself would be a crazy amount of time.
