Wifey Doesn’t Like My Raptor Lights

Late April, I installed a Yota Xpedition black grill in my 2022 SR5 Premium 4WD, doing away with the original factory chrome piece and its TOYOTA corporate emblem. (I didn’t want the optional TOYOTA block letters on the black cross piece.)

At the same time, I installed their three light set of Raptor lights in my new grill. I’ve never wired them in yet with the provided wire harness, so they’ve never been lit up. I was going to try to modify the wiring and put the lights on their own dedicated On / Off switch, but just haven’t gotten around to it yet.

In the mean time, wifey has been giving me flak about the Raptor lights. She doesn’t like the looks of them, telling me it’s going to look like a UFO when they light up.

I thought that I was going to need a little something on that all black grill to help break up all the black, but now I’m actually having second thoughts about those Raptor lights myself. You can see I did add that little yellow, orange, and red TOYOTA badge thingy at the lower corner of the grill.

I’m on the verge of uninstalling the three Raptor lights, if only to soothe the savage beast, (wifey), but then I’m worried that I’m going to end up with a grill that’s going to look too plain.

…….looking for support here, suggestions, or, poo poo the Raptor lights enough to sway me in to totally removing them. Ugh.

Other than that, does anyone know why they are even called “Raptor” lights in the first place? Who dreamt that one up?

I hope you dont take this the wrong way, plenty of people on this forum and others will, but in my opinion they look ugly and you should remove them.

She's correct. They're clearance lights for trucks over 80 inches in width. Ford was the first to put them in the grill for the Raptor to make it look cool and then all the truck ricers followed suit. Before that they were on the cab like the dually pickups and tractor trailers.

I'm someone who installed raptor lights on purpose, after replacing DRL with quad beam setup. Then removed raptor lights after few months because the LEDs inside was burning out.

The trend seems to be people buy raptor lights and install them, then ask people what they think. Most on this forum, but not all, think they're ridiculous, and wouldn't put them on if they were free.

There's also numerous threads on electrical issues after installing raptor lights.

That three-color-accent (I forget what it's called other than those Toyota truck colors) is color enough for me.

My opinion is to ditch 'em but I wouldn't fault someone who kept them. Miles better than the angry headlights treatment I've seen on Wranglers with the rare single sighting on an Xterra and Patriot.

Your wife is wise. Screw the Raptor lights, they're ridiculous. And, screw the stupid little ladders. Hope you don't have one of those too.

I'm new to 4Runners (not Toyota)... and when I got here and saw the Raptor lights, I was confused. Why do these guys drive a Toyota and dream of a Ford?

    OP,
Once Raptor lights have been installed in your vehicle, upon uninstallation they must be burned and destroyed by fire to make good with the Toyota Gods. Hopefully it’s not too late for you.

Your wife is right, maybe for one of the few times. They are no-no because they look like a Ford and provide exactly zero practical lighting.

Don’t beat yourself up about it, most of us are mostly kidding.

I don't have a problem with them, but there are plenty of people looking for a reason to find fault with your choices. Do what you like.

While I made a post joking, this is how I truly feel. It's your vehicle man, end of the day only your opinion matters. Do they look horrible, no. Would I put them on, no. But I'm considering adding rear lights to the back of my roof rack, so who am I to talk haha.

Personally I don't like them but I don't criticize those who do, it's their choice. That said, since I've been on this site all I have seen is people having problems with them. I would save the money towards a mod that actually does something to improve the rig.

Sounds to me like there’s a directly proportional relationship between a simple grille and a simple wifey. A complex grille gives you a complex wifey. But the wife is right, those raptor lights are questionable. My four piece are still in the box for similar reasons.
