Hi there, just bought my first 4 runner! 4 WD Limited. My sister in law has a 2000, original owner with 358,000 miles! I wanted a new sturdy dependable vehicle! My question is, how soon do I change the oil?

    Hey OP @4Runnermary

    Welcome here!
This is the #1 place for real world 4R knowledge.

Good question. First check your owners manual. Second, the Search feature in the top right corner will lead you to many helpful discussions and answers on this topic. Try to Navigate to the Forum for 5th Gen 4Runners first. Then when you hit Search you can select the checkbox for “Search this forum only”. And maybe use keywords like “first oil change”.
There’s a variety of opinions on the answer to your question, but I’m sure folks will answer this.

Thanks! It just felt so right after looking at a lot of other vehicles and I tend to keep mine for a long time!

I’ll answer the question. I changed my oil the first time at 750 miles. Lots of metal particles in the pleats of the filter and inside the filter canister. Second time at 1,500 miles. Dramatic reduction in metal particles, still there, but minimal. Last oil change was at 5,000 miles. No visual signs of metal shavings. Rotated the tires and greased the driveline at 5,000 as well. I used Toyota 0-20 OEM oil, filter & sealing washer. I tow a trailer and off-road from time to time. Welcome to the forum!
