Hey gang. Just bought my very first new car ever at 43 gears old. Couldn’t afford anything to be honest for a long time. Very proud to own a 2024 trd off road premium. Finally got to treat myself. Noticing a few things I never expected from an expensive vehicle. The cameras are literally like flip phone quality. Makes no sense it’s so poor. Literally thought I had a bad camera but they said “this is how they look”. Does anyone have a recommendation for after market that works well with the Birds Eye view. I have young kids and animals on farm I wanna be able to see clearly when we back up. Which leads to #2. No back up sensor that beeps when you get close to something. Wife made her first ding . Any help is appreciated. Thank you guys!

That’s how it looks. The issue is not really just the camera it’s also the screen.

Toyota finds something that works and is reliable and they keep it for a very long time.

Welcome. The camera quality with MTM is poor on the 4Runner. It's not 4k quality but works fine for me. You can add aftermarket backup sensors to your 4Runner.

My apologies for the misinformation. This was possible with the 2010-2019 models but it looks like Toyota axed the kit or I can't find it any longer.

That kit was not really from Toyota. It was a distributor kit aka “Port installed item”. It really was just a aftermarket item they listed as an option to make them more money like they do on all the other items the different Toyota distributors do.
The kit was most likely made by Rostra. They make/ supply lots of the different “dealer installed” and “port installed” items for several makes and models.

When an improved drop in camera is out, It will sell like hot cakes on the 4Runner.

After applying this stuff to the screen it really improved the clarity, easy 5 minute install.IMG_1054.jpg

I'd rather have something that integrates better with the head unit, but thanks for pointing out what's possible.

Of course I'm a huge proponent of using windows and mirrors to their best advantage. However, I must note that with the 4R sitting so high, plenty of hittable objects lurk below the limits of direct or reflected vision, more so than with a sedan or smaller, lower SUV. I appreciate having cameras that can look down, in front as well as behind, to provide as much information as I can get about my surroundings.

It would be nice if there was a comparable Toyota front and rear camera that you could swap out with a better resolution or even an aftermarket option available.

I own a 2014 Trail Premium and just bought a 2023 Off Road Premium last fall. The backup camera quality on the 2014 is much better than the 2023. I read somewhere that the camera was the same. It looks as if they did not do a good job with SW when combining images from multiple cameras and creating color graphic overlay. I was hoping Toy might come out with a firmware update, but I have not seen anything. Anyone heard of any Toyota factory solutions?

The following is my understanding, I could be wrong. They downgraded the resolution on the backup camera when the MTM cameras came out so they all had the same resolution. You can't upgrade the resolution by slapping a new camera in as the video bus on the head unit is the limiting factor. Pretty much have to rip out the entire head unit and put something totally custom in place.

I relocated my rear cam to my ladder so it can be higher. I did this when I had a swing away tire carrier. I left it there when I sold the swing away tire carrier. To lazy to put back the OEM cam.

Yep, the camera is kinda sad… funny part is that it’s even worse than the camera on my 2014 Tacoma was and that one was pretty bad also.

unfortunately, not much you can do as I’ve photos from folks who took the stock head units apart and the video inputs are standard RCA plugs so there is no way you are going to feed it any kind of HD video. Just what it is.

I’ve been driving since long before cameras in a car where a thing so I don’t mind so much. …….

The quality of the image on my FJ is better. But the monitor is to small (monitor is in the rear view mirror). I guess that you get better quality image when the monitor is smaller.

The image from the front cam looks better than the rear OEM cam.

when I picked up my 2023 ORP I too was shocked at the barely useable video quality. Im surprised there hast been some sort of accidents b/c this quality is so poor or lawsuit or recall. I initially thought maybe their was some sort or protective film on it or wax for transportation to the dealership so I tried cleaning it off but did not improve. I need to post some pictures of how my camera quality looks.
