I bought a used 2013 4R Trail and the previous owner told me the remote lock/unlock wasn't working even after replacing the battery in the key (this is the non-smart key, it has a physical key with buttons on it for the remote). For 6 months I've been using the physical key to lock/unlock which can be a hassle if you want to grab something from the passenger side.

The rubber on the rear hatch switch was falling apart, so I put in a new switch. After doing this the remote lock/unlock started working. The only other thing I did was make sure that the connectors to the Multiplex Network Door Computer were fully pushed in. This computer is located in the back hatch on a diagonal bracket, you'll see it when you take off the cover. There are two connectors with a lot of wires going to the computer, one of them was at a slight angle but I don't know if that was enough to cause an issue.

So if your remote is not working it could be a faulty hatch switch or loose connection. The old switch was still working and unlatching the hatch, but I'm thinking that with the torn rubber cover, water could have gotten in and messed up the electronics that communicate with the computer. Or maybe it was just pushing in the slightly crooked connector on the computer. Either way, I'm happy now.
