“Solar tinted glass -rear” ?

Just bought my new 4Runner and one of the description items says “solar tinted glass - rear”. What does that mean exactly? Is it a different type of tint than the side rear windows? I’m going to have the windows ceramic tinted but if the tailgate glass is already essentially ceramic it would save some $

 

Was it factory or dealer installed?

I think it’s referring to the rear side and hatch windows having a tint - especially if factory and you’ll want to ceramic all of them.

 

Is ceramic harder than glass?)

 

Put Xpel ceramic plus on my '24Runner Limited (live in Central Florida). BIG difference and well worth the money. Removed dealer install drivers/front passenger garbage tint. Went 15% all around and 70% windshield and sunroof. Very happy!

In this case it says ceramic but it's a film applied to the inside of the window. Get it for darker vision in/out and heat resistance but not for any sort of damage protection.

 

Solar don't mean shit extra in this case, it's a useless adjective; and rear designates everything behind the B pillar.

 

It's more than likely just the standard privacy glass they all get.

 

So when you get a ticket for too much tint on your windshield you'll pay the fine and not bellyache?

 

70% on the front windshield is legal in a lot of places. Even if it wasn't, it's barely noticeable to the naked eye. A legally tinted front windshield biggest benefit isn't a tinted appearance, it's the heat rejection during the day and glare reduction at night.

To my knowledge, Toyota does not offer factory or port installed window tint. Dealers may have it done aftermarket.

 

Everything behind the B pillar in every North American 4Runner is factory tint.

Technically the glass is dyed as part of the manufacturing process, not tinted with a traditional window film.

 

The factory tint is in the window. Not any type of film.....

 

Anyone know what % the factory tint is in the glass behind the B pillars? How about front drivers and passenger side?

 

My factory dyed glass measured just under 30% (28-29 if I'm remembering correctly). Toyota is more conservative than other manufacturers who commonly have the rear glass at 20% from the factory.

The front door glass is so slight that I didn't even bother to measure it.

 

To answer your question OP, Toyota factory dyed glass @ 29% tint. The individual dealer may or may not have added tint on top of that.

If you're going to tint the front windows to match the dyed rear glass, 35% or 20% both look correct. My Tundra, I only had the front windows done in 20%, matches great but it gets hot in there (I was too cheap to add ceramic to the rear windows). I had the 4runner front tinted 35% and the rears 80% (or no added darkness) ceramic film and it also matches. Your eye cannot tell the difference and both "match", one vehicle just has an overall darker look to it.

 

Each state has different tint laws so Toyota is only going to do the least to avoid legal actions, and still call it tinted windows.

 

That doesn't stop every other manufacturer from using darker rear glass.

 

My Rubicon had 20% in the rears from the factory. Went 20% over that and then 15% in the front and it looked great. #dmvwaiver
