Hello. We are in Texas and have bought our first 4 runner! Anyone open to sharing an off-road certification program? Thank you in advance.

Congrats and welcome! Check out Venture Unknown. We’re on FB and have a website too. Based in the southeast but there are members all over the country. Motto is “Explore, educate, encourage.” Workshops, amazing events, and lots of giving back through trail cleanups and such. Great group.

Merus Adventure offers the "Stage5" program. They cover a ton of stuff. They can help you learn about your vehicle and also learn how to recover a stuck vehicle safely. I haven't taken the course but I'm a member there if you ever want to check out beautiful Palo Duro Canyon and do some wheeling/ camping hit me up!

I recently signed up for the Stage 5 course that's coming up in September. I'm looking forward to the class and learning all I can about my ORP. Also signed up for the Rendezvous In The Ozark's that is scheduled for October.

Your best bet is to find a local group on FB and start going to meets and group rides to learn. Other great resources are on YouTube such as Matt’s Offroad Recovery and TrailMater to learn the proper way to conduct recovery operations. I’ve been to a few of the “learning sessions” conducted by some self proclaimed “experts” and was unimpressed, so just be careful who you learn from and remember as you gain knowledge in the offroad world you’ll figure out who to listen to and who to ignore. The absolute best advice I can give is to get out and go explore. Learn your rig by doing.

Try to avoid those that tell you that you “need” certain things to enjoy off-roading whether it be light or extreme. Talk to the folks who built their rigs themselves, avoid most 4x4 shops. There are a ton of brand-whores out there who will shit all over everything that isn’t what they have. Talk to experienced 4Runner people, figure out the direction you want to go with your build, do it, and have fun!
