Hey, going to the san Juans in CO to do some hikes which have off-road 4x4 high clearance roads. Wondering how much to air down my tires. I have the stock ones that came with my car. Side note if anyone would recommend leaving the stock mud flaps on or taking them off for this sort of off-roading please lmk. Thanks!

I go down to 18, maybe 15 in a pinch. It's possible to go lower, but I haven't had any problems yet.

Opinions vary on mud flaps. I still have stock. They've taken a couple hits and seem to be tougher than I expected. They do protect the body from some of the rocks the tires throw up, as well as mud. There are more flexible aftermarket options.

I've gone to 7-8 on the trd off road wheels. Usually, I just prefer to take the tire off and roll myself down the hill

I drive daily at 24psi up front and 20psi in the rear to allow the tires to flatten out and have perfect contact patch on the road. If I air down it’s to about 15. my wife drove my vehicle once and ran over a nail and kept driving it until someone stopped her and told her the tire was flat. When she got out and sent me a picture the rim was almost on the ground. So apparently you can run them as low as 3

I have a 2022 ORP so I feel ill-equipped to properly answer this question.

OP, Your TRD Pro came with Nitto all terrains and for where you are going, I would suggest airing down to around 18-20 psi. This will give you a smoother ride on the off pavement roads along with improved traction.

I will also be in the San Juan’s in July at the Rocky Mountain Toyota Roundup and will be running some of the 4x4 trails in my 2021 TRD OR which has BFG K02’s on stock wheels. I expect to run 18-20 psi while off pavement.

Have a great time in Colorado!

    Cheers,
    Bob

I am completely unqualified to answer but I did just stop in at my cabin in the San Juans and can't wait to push further in this summer.

You can try different pressures depending on the surfaces you expect, the ride you want, inflator capacity etc.

You didn't say you'd be rock crawling, so I wouldn't go too low. You're doing it for comfort more than traction, and I have the impression that you'll be traveling faster than crawling. I'd probably stay above 20 psi. If you're rolling along at a decent speed at too low pressure you may roll the bead. I think 20-25 psi is a pretty good sweet spot for driveability and comfort.

Also, don't go low without a way to fill back up.
