‍♂️ Just know it’s really not that bad of a job if you pay attention and know what you’re doing. Changed mine out in about 2 hours, which included a trip to get a 20” extension. Yes, you really need a 20” extension and universal to get an unnecessary factory bolt out. Didn’t think to take pics to do a write up on it.

The 1gr 4.0 is a great engine but it’s aluminum so can’t be rebuilt (arguably). However there are a ton of them out there so you can always get a junk yard engine

that being said I’ve done extensive searches on the highest mileage 4Runner and the only one I could find with actual documented proof was a guy on tacomaworld with our engine (2nd gen Tacoma) who had 500k miles when he sold it and said the buyer had over 600k miles

as far as 4Runners with the 1gr go I’ve seen them in the 300k mile range but haven’t seen one with documented proof of 400k or higher (not saying they don’t exist)

my buddy just hit 300k on his 2005 Tacoma with the 4.0 and his is the crappy year (head gaskets) all original everything he’s the original owner and has done lackluster jiffy lube type maintenance to his

My brother is using a 2018 4cyl Mercedes-Benz E class as taxi. He’s at 375,000 miles now and the car is still running fine with original engine and transmission. Sometimes the car is running for 12 hours a day. Do you run that much the 4Runner? I don’t think you have to worry about anything.

Thanks for enlightening us with your wisdom that no one asked for almighty keyboard warrior. Instead of talking shit why don’t you share useful information. At least on tacomaworld the trolls there are knowledgeable lol

Here is your useful information: Aluminum engines can be rebuilt.

I don't know what youtube video you heard this on but it's just wrong

I thought I heard our engines could not be re-sleeved.

I heard they cannot be re-sleeved. So a rebuild would depend on if the cylinders have no damage or extreme wear. I have experienced head removals on a different manufacture engine that I ran synthetic oil the entire life of the engine (368k miles). The cylinders still showed cross hatching from the hone, and no lip on the wall from piston rings. The heads were removed from valve seat wear causing a smog test failure.
Even the camshaft was still in specification. Mobil 1 was the oil used.

A guy in one of the FB groups I belong to recently posted pics of his 420k 2nd gen Taco, which is essentially the same drivetrain.

It also depends on how long you want to keep it going. If the motor is fine, but you get to a point where it needs, brakes, tires, suspension, steering work all at once, do you put the money into it or dump it? Lots of people would consider that the end for a vehicle, even though it is capable of going further.

Or being a Toyota, hopefully the chassis doesn't rust out first.

So you're saying it doesn't have cast iron cylinder liners?

I worked in a GM stamping plant fron 1991 to 1998. The body panels where not "dip galvanized" they where stamped out of double sided galvanized sheet metal that was shipped as rolls on enclosed flatbed trailers.

Galvanized sheet metal is self healing to a certain extent. The edges and minor scratches are protected by the zinc coating adjacent to them.

The car body dip is not galvanizing.

Shouldn't we be seeing 500K examples with the 5th gen? Seems Tacoma owners drive further.

33K miles per year since 2009 will get you there. I don’t know anyone who drives that much every year.

That’s a lot of driving. I think that a lot of the really high mileage Tacomas are delivery/courier vehicles for auto parts stores, etc. I don’t think many 4Runners are used for that. Rust will likely kill ours before it ever reaches really high mileage. The frame is already pretty rusty, worse than my Tacoma that’s 3 years older and has 186K miles.

Are the liners so thin they can't be overbored?

In rusty land yes. Plenty of them in rust free zones, but it's a lot of driving.

As for the motors, I don't recall every seeing or hearing about anyone rebuilding a 4.0. I guess most just get a salvaged motor-cheaper.

Unfortunately a lot of us live in the rust belt.

Anyone have reports of wp failing this soon? I thought it was closer to 150k. This is from engine link above.

water pump is a weak point; its longevity is about 40-50k miles. So, pay extra attention to the condition of the coolant system
