Two Questions- Easy

Hey Folks,

Picking up our new 2024 TRD Off Road tomorrow. Meanwhile I'm attempting to get my 'ducks' in a row.....

1. Does the 2024 4runners have the metal oil filter housing or is it still the plastic one? Amazon shows that none of them fit a 2024?????



2. Will this oil filter housing removal tool work on the 2024 models??? Amazon say that it does not work.

lol, I didn't see that...just went off of 5th gen 4Runner as the OP stated.

 

Okay,,,, so what filter housing can I get????

 

I don't think it would show that it fits even if OP selects the correct vehicle though... Because it doesn't.
The plastic housing is the standard equipment and I believe the aluminum housings are not a direct replacement. There is a steel mesh inside that has to be swapped out.

Congrats and welcome. A note of caution going forward, as you do your own maintenance: "OEM" parts on Amazon aren't always OEM, even if stated so. Dealership or similar is the most reliable way to get OEM. Lots of folks on here have gotten bogus filters and what have you.

I second what @Daddykool and @1SilverRunner said about bogus parts on Amazon. Amazon is becoming the new EBay when it comes to counterfeit parts and some tools.

 

Hey Guys,,,, All good advise. Gotta say I apologize for my post. After looking deeper I found a post from 'craftech' dated Mar 2, 2024. Great discussion and pointed me in a good direction.

I think I'll just get a new plastic one from Toyota and keep it as a 'back-up'. I will get the removal tool....

I have 11 years and 174k miles on the OEM plastic filter housing. I don't think changing it out is crucial.

They didn't change anything mechanically for 2024, so a filter wrench from an earlier year will work. The MotivX one is nice.

As someone else said above, the metal housing is not an actual 4Runner part, I think it's from the Highlander or Camry and just happens to "fit" with some modification.

 

Looks like I was writing my previous post as you were posting this.

Nice thing about having the 2nd housing is that you can get it loaded with the new filter and O-ring ahead of time, so you can pull the old one out and pop the new one right in without having to crawl back out from under the 4R. Then you can clean up the old one for the next time at your leisure.

Honestly messing with the filter is my least favorite part of the job.

 

I think that's a good idea! I was like you, wanted to get a metal (AL) replacement. I did, it seemed identical and fit fine. Then I saw an episode of "The Car Care Nut" (he's a Toyota master mechanic) on YouTube and he strongly advised against replacing the plastic one with something aftermarket. Just because it looks the same and fits the same doesn't mean it's engineered the same (as it relates to the spring rate for the bypass). So at my next oil change the factory housing went back on. If you haven't seen any of his YouTube videos he's really got some good advice about caring for your 4R and Toyota products in general.

Definitely get the Motiv tool though (for a 4R), I did and it's awesome. BTW, I also have a 2024 TRD OR and it definitely fits!

 

Welcome. Just keep the plastic and get the Motivix tool. Don't tighten in with all your might either.

 

Amazon (or the vendors) take a while to catch up on compatibilities for current model year. I got my 4R at the end of May in '23, and for at least 2 months after, most things where (incorrectly) showing up as incompatible.

 

I would not buy anything mission-critical from Amazon. They regularly substitute vendors, you can easily get stuck with chinesium part.

 

Why not the one that comes with it? You're not gaining anything by switching it out.

 

Do not buy any Toyota parts from Amazon, including filters. There are lots of reports of counterfeits.

I’ve bought most of my parts and accessories from BAM Wholesale. You can also find dealers offering discounts or free shipping so bulk purchases of oil filters, oil and gaskets work out well.

 

There is nothing wrong with the plastic one.

 

Java, all the above posts make good sense. I'm on track and thank all that contributed in my getting my head straight.
