My falken wildpeak at3ws have been amazing in dry and wet and snow and I wheel more than 90 percent of the population I run 10ply e rating though. I used to run ko2s and those are pure garbage in snow (turn rock hard no matter how low you air down)

We knew going in that I was going to scrape some, there was a go around, but I wanted to do it.

everyone else had a lift and bigger tires than me.

I just put a 3inch lift this weekend.

I agree with the sentiment that the stock 4R is very capable as is. I do a lot of remote desert driving in deep sand and rocky ledges, slick rock, sometimes mud. I don't do, and have no desire to do, advanced rock climbing. I don't need my 4R to be sexy looking. My 4R is stock except for tires. It actually came with rock sliders, which I removed:) In about 50 years of offroading I've never needed them. I use off road tires and my brain to avoid much trouble. But, YMMV, each to his own.

Again this is all fantastic advice. And I know these kinds of questions are answered often, so I appreciate everyone taking the time. One more question about armor: do you think it's reasonable to keep the stock skids (trd off road, not pro) until they are beat up and then replace them? I'd love to defer the cost. But I keep hearing they are inadequate. I still have the temp tag on and I've already scraped the front skid...

You can damage a TRD pro in Moab.

if you had a Subaru you can wheel “out in Moab” without damage.

What kind of trails will you do? There isn’t a single prescription of what Moab requires

You only have a front engine skid and fuel tank skid. Both are thin steel and can take some abuse. It really comes down to what trails you plan on doing and if they have obstacles/rocks. Once you take a solid hit on transfer case or transmission the skids would have been worth it.

Rear diff also. Yes it's solid and steel but also the lowest point. I added extra armor around it knowing it will take some hits. I feel your pain on where to prioritize $ on brand new truck.

Totally understand. My plan was Fins N' Things, with the option to bypass really tough stuff if necessary, though would like to give some obstacles a try!

I watched quite a few vids before I started modding my 4R. The common theme was to get sliders first. If you ding the rocker panels, they are very difficult and very expensive to repair. For your $2500 budget, you can get sliders and tires. You may have enough $$$ left for an air compressor, but you can air up at a gas station in town. My 1st trip to Moab, I aired down to 18 psi and left it there for the duration. Only aired up before leaving for home 5 days later. The longest drive to a trail from town was about 1/2 hour at highway speed.

Improving the approach and departure angles would help.

That’s actually a good idea. Then you can reinstall after the trip.
