    Hi team,

I do things like heat my vehicle up in the winter and move things in and out of the vehicle while it's running. Sometimes I even put my child in his car seat while the car is running. During this time the keys are often in my pocket and therefore the 4runner beeps at me because OMG key not inside the magic zone.

    a) I know I can put the keys in the vehicle while I do these activities.
    b) I know I can turn the car off while I do these things.

Let's proceed with the assumption that there is a valid use case for leaving keys in your pocket while moving items in and out of the vehicle and opening/closing doors.

How do I disable (or set volume to zero) for the beeps associated with the KEY NOT FOUND situation?

Same thing has been on my mind. I really hope someone has found a solution for this!

    It's a long list...
100% agree that there is a valid case for keys in pocket while the 4R is running while doing stuff with the vehicle.

Simple but annoying solution: Take the fob out of your pocket and put it in the cup holder near the heated seat switches. The key antenna for the front area is right there. There's also an antenna under the rear seat, and one in the trunk. I think the sensing radius for those antennas is maybe 2-3 feet.

Unfortunately, there's no way to disable the "Key not Detected" beeps because it is a software feature owners (& dealers as well) do not have access to modify. The Smart Key ECU is constantly monitoring which antenna(s) are picking up the signal from the FOB and cross references which antennas receive that signal for fob location. The Beeping (if I remember correctly) comes from two locations. The wireless buzzer (which I believe you can adjust the volume on, so try doing that with Techstream), and the Instrument cluster buzzer (No access to change this).

Example, if you start the vehicle with the fob in it it, Antenna #1 (front area) picks up the signal. When you go to leave with the fob, antenna #1 no longer sense the fob, but antenna #2 (touch door handle) senses the fob in it's vicinity outside the vehicle. Annoying, but that's how it works in a nutshell.

Where is the beeping thing located? I’m having the same Pain in Beep! Best solution is to find the beeping unit and destroy it! Any idea of its location? Iv looked but not hard…. Thanks

I found this in my documents but have not yet approached a dealer in regards to making changes. Hopefully this may help, It would be worth a shot to investigate further.

Sorry I’m not able to down load the file.
In respect, I requested the issue to be solved by the dealer ship along with other issues. I have been leaving the spare fob in the truck ( I leave the truck running a lot and am constantly n and out of it using it for work, not to mention camping and over landing)that being said… the beeps start get annoying. After a bill of $208 they informed me that the issue could not be fixed due to its programming and BS.
Still going to Per-sue the issue because I’d prefer to not leave the fob in it. On another issue. The back glass window, it will roll down from out side the truck (not running) but not back up if a fob is in it. It took the dealer 2 hours to fugue this out. The doors will all lock although. I find this odd. (Part of the $208 charge)

    Gentlemen.

I bump this thread as it was one that came up when I was searching for the location of the piezo buzzer / beeper / whatever the fuck it is.

As above, I hate leaving the engine running and exiting with the fob on me because the truck begins beeping at me. If you then open another door it beeps some more.

It's been making me nuts. On trips I stop a million times for pictures and every time I get out, "beep beep beep" elicits a curse word from me.

I had to take my front bumper off anyway so I made a decision today I was going to find this little mother fucker and I wasn't quitting until it was dead.

    I did find it!

It's behind the drivers side fender. It sounds like it is by the headlight but that's the sound echoing through the open fender and being projected out the headlight.

You can cut the wiring going in from the engine bay which will take all of 1 second to do, or you can go up through the fender liner and remove the whole unit and unplug the wiring. I did the second so as to keep the wiring intact if this fucked something up (it didn't).

Potential downsides: I think this also is your remote door lock beeper, so if you have your door locks set to make noise (I don't) you will likely lose that option. Mine have been off since day one via Carista, so no way to test it. This is also the beeper that alerts you if you are trying to lock the doors but a door is still open or not completely latched - that long steady tone. That's actually how I found this - I left a door open and kept hitting the "lock" button on the remote about 147 times in a row. You will lose that warning also.

So, with that said... This is what you are looking for:

    PXL_20240517_141257053.jpg

Location deep inside the driver's fender:

    PXL_20240517_134952198~2.jpg

    Closer view:

    PXL_20240517_135015785~2.jpg

Going up through the fender liner, it's all by feel unfortunately. You will sacrifice one of the retaining pins by ripping it out, but those are easily replaced with an "automotive style variable depth fastener" sold in your local hardware aisle for like 30 cents. If you rotate the unit 180 degrees up the plastic retainer gives out and frees it and there's enough wiring slack to pull out of of the fender area to disconnect it:

    PXL_20240517_141031643.jpg

Wiring going to beeper from engine bay. It's hard to get a good pic. This is on the driver side, approximately in the area just under the hood strut. The wiring runs through a large grommet in the fender, and you can pull the wiring and connector back through and into the engine bay if you just unplug the beeper rather than cut it off. This would then enable you to reinstall the beeper in the future and leave it in the engine bay, where it will be muted; or you could wrap it with electrical tape and further mute it if you don't want it to be so loud:

    PXL_20240517_141142881~2.jpg

And after you unplug it, this is the only warning you get - a visual one, as it fucking should be!!

Heard of people ignoring the beep, driving a decent distance then turning the vehicle off only to realize they couldn't start it-keys were at home. I would prefer the reminder.

You are the man!!!! thank you thank you.

Can you figure out how to put the car in accessory mode after you turn off your engine? Rather than turning off the car completely and then turn it back on in accessory mode?

Actually there is a sorta fix for this that essentially involves wiring two fuse taps to each other; I think it's risky though.

I'm curious to the reason why OP and others would rather keep the key on them rather than leave it in the cupholder. Not that there's anything wrong with it but I cant figure out why?

Two thumbs up for this info. One for the information on where that beeper is (although I like the lock beeper so I'll test that before I leave it off). The other for "brochacho". Not saying I'm going to use it... but...

Speaking for myself, It's not that I want to keep the key on me so much as I just do keep the key on me. Keys go into pockets. Toyota has gone out of their way to make the fob something you can just put away and not have to manipulate - doors open when in proximity, they lock when you walk away, etc. Having to manipulate it to put it into the cupholder is just... devoid of a point. Plus, my cupholders are in use and Toyota failed to design a good spot to put the fob other than those, which further makes it easier to just leave in a pocket.

Then, get out to check the mail and BLEEP BLEEP BLEEP.

    No more....

I leave the driver side door open (not all the way out) when it is running. It does not beep, it will shut off after 10 minutes if I am to far from the range.
