2024 Landcruiser Engine Performance

Anybody own one of these and can comment about power and performance on road? All the publications haven't been able to publish instrumented tests and the majority of reviews were of the cars driving through the very specifically designed off-road course so it's tough/impossible to get a real sense of the feel with respect to on-pavement power. The torque and HP figures are impressive but does it translate to seat of the pants feel?

I don't even think they're on lots yet in my area. I'll probably try to look at one once they are.

 

Appreciate that, and I’ve seen all those but I feel like they’re all rather vague. Figured now that people are taking them home and I’m seeing pics and videos of owners with them, it would be nice to get a (possibly biased) better and more fulsome review of acceleration and passing power, etc.

It’s also tough to get a sense since those two videos seem to contradict one another. Haha. Feel like Doug is touting it’s power while the Throttle House guys seem like they’re saying it motivates the car forward with less gusto than the numbers would imply.

 

This is probably something a test drive would be the best way to go. I would guess it’s peppier off the line (turbo + electric) but maybe it has less steam for passing than that?

You already see here a wide range of 4Runner opinions, it’s slow, it’s quick, etc. so hard to really quantify for so many different people.

 

I have a better chance of test driving a Maserati than a Land Cruiser. That's because there's a Maserati dealership 30 miles down the road that usually has something. I'm pretty sure any Land Cruiser that reaches a dealership in this area was pre-sold.

 

Backpacker above already said what I was going to say. I cannot test drive any because they are all spoken for, so they will let some sit on the showroom floor prior to pickup by their owners to solicit more purchases, but aren’t allowing test drives.

Anybody who says a 5th Gen 4Runner is quick, loses all credibility. It isn’t supposed to be a race car but that doesn’t mean we should be outright lying about it, just because we love it and are fine with the trade off of it being a “deliberate” vs powerful mover.

The Land Cruiser is currently the only Toyota among that TNGA ladder frame trio of upper end 2025 4Runner or 2024 Tacoma being delivered so figured somebody might own one and be able to speak to it. Wonder when the turbo hybrid trims of the 4th Gen Tacoma are gonna start showing up?

 

Yeah, it's far from ideal. I was lucky that one dealership within driving distance had a year-old trade-in available to drive. It was more to convince my wife than anything else, since I had previously rented a 4R. I should start checking on whether any dealerships even get Land Cruiser allocations. I saw a new Sequoia last week when I was picking up parts. It was the first one I've ever seen on the lot in this area.

 

The 5th gen is the quickest daily I've owned at allegedly 7.5 seconds 0-60 so it's quick by my standards. "Quick" is a vague adjective after all. You may be used to zippier cars so your frame of reference point is different.

We already have two seemingly conflicting descriptions from reviewers filming so I don't know what the internet can give you then. Maybe someone with a vehicle history that matches yours and buys one could chime in.

 

+1. I just used the Toyota.com inventory search tool and everything within 100 miles of Boston is just an allocation that’s still being built. Deliveries starting 3rd week of May.

I may get a peek at one in the wild soon. There is a house down the street that I believe is either a Toyota dealership owner or corporate employee of some sort. His driveway is like a dealership and always 3-4 brand new Toyotas with dealer plates. Last week I went by and there was a GR Corolla. There has been a Tacoma TRD Pro and a Grand Highlander coming and going for a couple months. Last fall there was one of those bZ4 electrics camped out and before that he had a Sequoia TRD Pro in the driveway I swear before you could even reserve an allocation.

 

I always loved corvettes and was going to buy one in 2006 without a test drive. My buddy got one just before my plan to get one and let me drive it. After driving it I didn’t want one anymore. I mean the performance and drive was there but the seating i hated.

 

Sure. A 4Runner is quick relative to a Huffy powered by a 6-year old so on that basis and logic, we can never really agree when something is speedy or slow because we can always find a relative basis for comparison to support our claim. I’d say when using fellow modern day cars as a comparison, the least expensive economy cars do 0-60 in 8-10 seconds these days (not my opinion but according to instrumented tests) and most 0-60 times published for the 4.0 V6 4Runner put it in that range and not 7.5 seconds. So if the least expensive cars of its generation keep pace with it, meaning other peer model year cars are quicker, it’s safe to say it’s relatively slow since the majority of cars are quicker than it. I love 4Runners as much as anybody else on this forum but won’t flat out say untruths about it. It’s got plenty going for it without needing to do so. Quickness is definitely not one of its attributes.

 

Its all subjective, based not only on what you are used to but also how you drive it.

The last 3 vehicles I have owned in reverse order. These are the car magazine published 0-60s.

2023 4Runner. 270hp 4750lb 17.5lb/hp 7.5 sec
2014 Tacoma 240 hp 4200lb 17.5lb/hp 6.8 sec
2003 Acura RSX-S 200hp 2900lb 14.5lb/hp 6.7 sec

On paper, they all should be close enough in performance that its hard to tell the difference. In the real world the Taco and 4R feel like land barges and the little acrua felt like a go cart that could run circles around them. In daily driving the acura definitely was far quicker as it had direct cable throttle and a close ratio 6 speed that would just wind up effortlessly off the line. I think its MUCH easier to actually match the measured value daily driving it than the Taco for example, where you would have to put your foot do the floor and drive it like you hate it to get anywhere close to that number.


Oh and the first (very used ) car I ever owned..

But to be honest even I don't remember feeling as slow as the Taco.


Thing is we are spoiled, even the most boring car today can drive circles around anything made in the 90s and before and a lot of easily attainable vehicles today put 60s muscle car to shame on the dragstrip. Gotta keep it all in context.......

 

I saw one on the road in boston metro area! None on the lots but I was surprised someone is driving it already.
I see gx550 regularly -- only on the lot though.

 

OK, to you it’s based on comparing to economy cars that can be bought new at the time of comparison.

I see it then as more what the numbers are. If we happen to be all rolling around in 6-second Bolt EV’s I’d call those quick too but that’s just me.

I saw one yesterday coming north out of manhattan nyc. It was sharp and caught my eye.

 

I surprised a guy driving an Accord turbo one day while driving my 2019 4R. It irritated him ;-)

 

Not going to lie i would have preferred they did the 300 series here like overseas instead of this 65-80k 4cylinder turbo hybrid joke. I miss the 200 series with a passion.

 

That 300 is UGLY from the back. I think 200 is fine, 100 is better, 80 was the best -- purely in terms of styling/looks.

80 series was my favorite too. Still would have preferred the 300 coming to the states instead of what we got. I thought maybe they would recreate like a fj40 remake and make an fj cruiser like idea again. Nope. I vote they take all the old 5.7L v8s that were not used, chop the back off the 5th gen 4runner, put in a solid front axle, and add front and rear lockers and call it a the new T100

 

Impressive torque numbers that's for sure. I'd like to test drive one and see how they feel. But I have no interest in buying one personally

 

This is exactly why asking for opinions on an internet forum is sometimes useless.

I personally think the 4Runner performs fine, or actually pretty well compared to previous generations. But, some of the people here are comparing it to their previous sport sedan, or whatever, in which case, it's a dog.

Modern day cars are a terrible comparison, IMO, because even a Camry blows the doors off of pretty much any 80's sports car.

I would guess that anyone who is complaining about the performance of the current 4Runner has never driven anything that's actually slow.

 

Compare 0-60 times of 1970s Corvettes to get an idea. That was one of the fast cars of the day, and it ran 0-60 times similar to my 2019 4R. Heck, today's 4Runner is a full second faster to 60 than some of them.

 

100%. I think its power is adequate, I don’t feel it’s lacking. Sure more power would have been good and it’s not going to be the fastest vehicle on road. But it serves my needs completely.

 

I mean this is exactly my point. Silly me to have assumed that we are attempting to compare cars (broadly) of the same vintage. If not, we would need to define and caveat and qualify every time we make a statement since I can argue anything on a relative basis. There was a time when Porsche 911s did 0-60 in the 8s…. Those cars were fast for their vintage and slow now. There was never a time a 4Runner model was fast for its vintage.

 

That is funny I to have a neighbor that is pretty much the same with always with a number of brand new Toyota's and change about every 3 or 4 months. I hope to catch them outside at some point and ask them why so many Toyota when I am walking my dog past their house. Right now they have a 4R TRD Pro and Limited plus a Grand Highlander as well. Also a new Vet is the garage....hard lift for these people.

 

I thought about one too until I used the build and price tool on Toyota Canada's website. Base 1958 starting at $72,903 CAD. Thats a lot of for something 4 cylinder and no leather or sunroof. Top model swells to $93,593 and these figures are before any taxes or fees -__-
