Radar Detector/Camera Hardwiring

There's threads on this but I just wanted to elaborate on the wiring aspect of it.
Mine's a 2024 4R but I don't suspect any differences across the models.
Removing the wiring cover is a little tricky. It's made of two separate pieces that telescope to make it longer or shorter. Slightly finger pinch the lower piece and push it up into the upper piece to shorten the cover, then use a flat plastic piece to pop it off. It must be collapsed to clear the mirror stem. Now the mirror wiring connector is exposed. You can push the tab on the connector and pull it apart. If you don't disconnect it, you won't have enough room to plug in any wires. I zip tied my detector wiring to the mirror wiring so they can't come out. The mirror tap I used has two sets of connectors, you can see the unused larger connectors hanging free. This last picture is my "expert quality" sketch of the wiring of the connector:

There are only two wires used on the connector, a blue switched 12 volt and a white(?) ground. You can't go wrong.

 

Just use the Dongar pigtail and you don't have to mess with the wiring at all. Completely plug and play and gives you a usb port up there to plug whatever you want to into it.

 

My main point was how to remove the cover without breaking it.
I needed 12 volts for my application anyway.

 

So how did this work out?

Did you use a Mirror Mount or Blendmount for the radar detector?

 

Works perfectly.
I used the Blendmount from my 2021 Tacoma. Perfect fit even though Blendmount doesn't say it fits.

 

I wanted to add some details to the wire cover to make it easier to remove. Contrary to other posts, you don't need to pinch and pull down the top cover. The top cover has a ratcheting mechanism similar to a zip tie on the interior of flat surface facing the interior of the vehicle. If you put you finger on the top of the wire cover on this surface, pull outwards, and push downwards, it will disengage the ratchet and it will come down with little to no force. You can then use a pry tool to lift the side and disengage the side clips from the mirror to remove it.
