I have, by way of tragic circumstance inherited my oldest son’s 1988 4 runner. He passed in ‘21 and I have his 88’ 4Runner. It needs work. Some rust on the passenger side. Runs but I don’t have time or a place to work on it. Do I fix it up or sell it? I have a 19 limited nightshade and love 4 runners. I’m in the Stanwood Washington area in an HOA that has said nothing about it in my driveway. I’ll post some pics after work today. Any advise is appreciated and I’m sorry if I brought anyone down with this post.

I’m so sorry to hear of your loss, I am a father of three sons, I can’t imagine how that would feel. I personally would keep it and fix it up, not all at once, but a little at a time and farm out the major issues as I saved up for them. May God bless you and the rest of your family. Welcome to the forum.

    Welcome.
Sorry to hear about the circumstance in which you inherited your 4Runner. I would keep it and fix it up, just for the sentimental value of having it.

I'm in a similar situation. I have a 95 Tacoma that was given to me by my dad before he passed. That thing is rusted and sits in my driveway. The plan is to fix it up when I have some free time, and I won't get rid of it.

Sorry to hear about your eldest son. If keeping his 4Runner brings you comfort, then keep it.

I am so sorry to hear about you losing a son, gosh I cannot imagine what that would be like. I never married and never had children but I can totally get the emotional attachment to that vehicle. My heart goes out to you. Personally if you can afford to keep it and get it fixed up as you can I would do that, or at the very least do not be in a rush to get rid of it. My prayers and heart go out to you my friend.

Since you don't have the time or place to patch it up I lean towards parting with it but I don't know you, your son or the role that vehicle has necessarily played in your lives. In my case, my father and I don't have a very vehicle-centric dynamic.

My parents had a widowed neighbor who kept the late husband's ~2000 Expedition (red) around for years. It sat in the driveway with the occasional drive and eventually it was towed away, frame rust finally did it in if I remember right. I don't know if that was a net positive or negative for her, but that's the path she chose.

You could also try the Marie Kondo method to help inform your thoughts. Does it spark joy in you, do you enjoy it's presence?
