Soon to be 4runner owner! I found this forum for help with information while looking to purchase a used 4runner TRD Pro. I had a Tacoma but while it was being repaired I had a 4runner as a rental and fell in love. The extra room for the grandkids was great. The ride was super smooth. Can't wait to be able to post a pic of my new beauty once I have it. :)

Welcome. Just a small suggestion. Can't you buy a brand new TRD Offroad Premium instead? How much are you paying for the used TRD Pro?

There is a thing called KDSS that comes on TRD Offroad Premium only, and it is an amazing feature. At least test drive one of those, you will love it. It makes the 4Runner less truck like and helps offroad too

Yep, KDSS is by far the best option I picked out before shopping for a TRD ORP. Welcome aboard.

Welcome. I love my 1998 4runner limited. I still think the 3rd generation is the best.

KDSS isn't commonly found in TX as it was not sold in the Gulf States Toyota region.

My TRDORP did not come with KDSS. I found out later this option is pretty hard to find in Texas.

Personally I'm glad it didn't... 3.5" lift with long travel rear suspension outperforms a 2.5" with KDSS in my experience.
Not discounting KDSS though. At stock-ish height it has some fantastic advantages both on and off road.

If you're not going to lift the rig I think the Pro is a good move if you can afford the "Pro Tax"
I chose the TRD Off Road mainly because it had the rear locker and I new I would lift the thing anyways. Plus I didn't want an extra system that could fail. Normal sway bars for me.

I was trying to change my KDSS ORP order to a non-KDSS because my main reason for wanting a 4Runner in the first place is because I want the most reliable, easy, and BASIC setup possible. However I just said screw it and left it with the KDSS after listening to ‘The Care Care Nut’ talk about how it’s pretty basic itself, and easy to repair/replace. So yes it’ll be more things that can go wrong than non-KDSS, but oh well it now seems like a bearable trade off to me. Although I would prefer the non-KDSS (I couldn’t switch the order to non-KDSS without also paying for the TRD alloy wheels which I decided against).

Something that I think about is that I am a low mileage person, so let's say that 15 years from now it goes, and needs to be replaced…is there a possibility that it’ll be obsolete and impossible to get??

^^ so I did wind up changing to non-KDSS, bought a 4Runner today. I probably would have been cool with either, but I just saw a good deal ON the lot and jumped on it. And it was ORP but no KDSS.

Unfortunately they’re probably 6 weeks out still lol, Hefty FabWorks. RSG was my second favorite. My plan was to immediately get an undercoating treatment on the 4Runner, I thought about waiting for the sliders, but I’m gonna just get it undercoated ASAP, then put the sliders on after I get them (and powder coat them).

I purchased yesterday. I ended up in a 2018 with 61k miles. I LOVE it! I especially love the roof-long Gobi rack and ladder.
