Hello I’m new to this forum and to the 4Runner scene in general. I’ve been wanting to get into overlanding just not sure where to start. What suspension components do I need for light off roading and camping? Do I just need better shocks? Just upgraded springs? Just a level kit? Or do I need to completely overhaul the suspension and get all knew springs, struts, shocks, control arms?

Before you buy anything, determine what the terrain will be like and if you really need to upgrade. What do you consider "light off-roading"? If you're running fire lanes, the stock suspension will probably be fine. If you need better approach and departure angles then a lift would be in order. I have a bottom of the barrel Dobinson suspension and it got me here with the factory UCA's.

Keep it stock and gain experience until you can really benefit from such upgrades; a quality set of tires will get you far in a stock setup

Okay thank you. My main concern is in the future will the factory springs be able to handle the extra weight from rooftop tents, bumpers, wench, sliders etc?

You'll need stiffer springs if you add all that weight, which will require some planning. Be realistic about what you're going to add and when.

My suspension is still stock, and it won't change for the foreseeable future.

    A work in progress.....
First off how many miles on it? If it has high miles you may want new springs and shocks. If it is low mileage stock may be fine for now.

    Nothing...
A stock 4R is very well equipped from for 99% of forest roads. Good tires will get you just about anywhere you need to go.

If you start finding rock gardens or going to off road parks you will discover small weaknesses. Address those as they come up.
Soon you'll have a purpose built rig for your use case.

There is no set formula. Everyone's use case is different, and people modify for their individual needs.

Dumping a bunch of money on sh*t people on the internet say you "need" is about the dumbest thing possible.

I agree with others. Keep it stock and determine what your off roading needs are. I waited a year and noticed I needed additional clearance and I also wanted to go to Toyota Jamboree wheee I knew I’d need a better suspension. I then purchased Eibach
