Curious to hear thoughts/speculation on what the 6th gen will do to the value of our 5th gens? I can see it going either way regarding increase or decrease in value. Let me know what y'all think

They may hold value longer, but will not increase. These are assets, not investments.

All you're going to get is speculation, and we could be spot on, but chances are.....we'll be wildly wrong. We won't know until the 6th gen comes out and then see how sales go the first few years.

I know that my personal 4Runner will continue to get cooler and badass. Wanna know why? Because it's fuckin' mine!

I honestly think they'll hold their value real well for much longer and at higher mileage. Not so much because of the I4 i-Force, but because the 5th gen is the literal last dinosaur of a truck or any vehicle of its kind. We will never see any new generation of vehicles with N/A V6.

If Tacoma pricing is any indication, 6th gen will sticker several thousand dollars higher than 5th gen of the same trim level. This will prevent 5th gen residual values from dropping too severely.

Agreed, they’re definitely not investments. But I wouldn’t even classify any vehicle as an asset, unless you’re a rental car company that is generating cash by owning it.

I love my 4R and it will likely retain its value relatively well, but it costs a lot of money to own. So I’d classify it as a liability.

There's no real way to tell what will happen. I think that nothing different will happen from any other regular vehicle.

They are DEPRECIATING assets. People need to remember that. It's never worth the same amount that you paid when you bought it. This is true for vehicles, furniture, or any electronics (phones, tv's, computers, etc..).

Thankfully some assets depreciate slower than others.

Technically speaking, yes they are depreciating assets. But people tend to focus on just the resale value, and not the ongoing cost of ownership. Not to mention you can go down the rabbit hole of mods which is even more money you’ll never recover.

I’m just enjoying the 4R for what it is without thinking too much about what it will be worth down the road. And I’m an accountant by education.

Personally I’m not impressed by the 6th gen, as I like my vehicles to be old school.

Many people have already noticed an increase in used 5th gen values since the release of the 6th gen info, at places like KBB. Once the remaining new stock of 5th gens increasingly diminishes the prices of 5th gen will go up again. Once the 5th gens are gone, they're gone.

I'm gonna be that guy that posts his 4Runner for sale with a list price of $80k "No low-ball offers, I know what I have!"

Might even seem reasonable when Toyota releases pricing of 6th gen Trailhunter models...

Actually the last year of the 5th Gen will be a appreciating asset. It sounds crazy like negative interest rates but these last real trucks will appreciate 35% or more. Is there a intrinsic value? Hmmm...

Exactly right. But I guess it makes us feel better from a financial standpoint to justify our personal vehicles by talking about resale value.

Just the fact that you can sleep in your 5th gen makes it golden brothers. Battery packs are a nightmare, no pun intended...

I've seen the dealer prices come down on new 5th gens. The same dealers are telling me the 5th will drop right now due to the 6th Gen hype. Then they'll come back up a couple thousand right before the 6th Gen hits the dealer lots.

It's kind of funny. When I was growing up, my dad always told me "Get a good paying job so you can pay your bills on time, otherwise you'll wind up sleeping in your car!"

Now, grown ass men who make damn good money do that shit on PURPOSE. I don't get it. Ya'll call it "Overlanding", I call it "Homeless people living in cars". :crapstorm::duel:

The battery pack location reminds me of the sub crew that asks, "Is this my bunk over the torpedo?"

Just priced my Pro on KBB and top private party value is coming in over $58k. That’s near what I paid for it brand new.

It's only the beginning. It's clear here and elsewhere that even among 4Runner enthusiasts, there is great division over the new 6th gen. Right or wrong, as I've believed since the launch, the 5th gens are going up in value and before long the new 5th gens will be scooped up in rapid order.

If this is the case, I may just migrate over to a GX550 sooner, if someone buys my rig for ridiculous amounts of money.

While the overall fleet will diminish in resale value over the years, the gems that are kept stock, mint, in the garage, not wheeled hard, driven less than average miles, etc. Will become the collector cars of the future. 20 years from now a guy that couldn't afford one now will have disposable income and have nostalgia for the 4runner he always wanted, or maybe like the one his parents had that he remembers fondly, and will want the cleanest one he can find, so as to start with a clean slate.

This +1 - well kept 5th gen 4runners will be the next iteration of the Land Cruisers story (80 series up to the end of the previous gen). Solid, reliable, simple design... keep them maintained.

I find it funny. We claim we buy this vehicle because of its bulletproof design, and that we can hold on to it forever. We all knew there would be a new design at some point.
Why should we care if we are anyway going to hold on to it “until the wheels fall off”. The vehicle is reliable and unless you sell it you won’t realize the gains/losses because of increase/decrease in its value.

Have you looked at the prices of 50 year old Norton Commandos lately? You'll pay more for one of those than a 5 year old Harley Davidson.

23% last year. Sadly 8% does not even keep pace with real inflation....
