Has anyone programmed their own key that looks like this? I only received this key and the valet key with my used 4Runner and I want to put a spare key in the hidden hitch before my son goes off to college 4 hours away.

This website offers a "rental" programmer you can get with replacement keys, that apparently a deposit is paid for, and refunded when returned:

Yeah, I found that site while searching but that still seems like a really high cost to program a key.

I didn't look into the cost...someone on the forum must have done this. Have you checked with a local locksmith?

Planning to stop by a local locksmith this week. Tomskey.com is going to be close to $200 for a single key which includes the key, cutting, and rental of the programmer. I'm hoping there's a cheaper solution because that seems a bit much to me.

Ace Hardware will cut a key and program from $99 plus tax so I'm going that route since it's just going to be a spare key kept in the hidden hitch.
