I purchased a new 1988 4Runner and sold it because driving an hour into NYC for work wasn't ideal. I still regret that decision !!!! Now i'm newly retired i'm trying to decide which to buy, a TRD PRO or ORP with or without KDSS ? The vehicle will be driven only on local and highway roads. Which model has the least amount of bounce ? Inventory is limited in NY and i see In Transit or In Production in some listings. I'm also seeing as much as a 5K dealer adjustment above MSRP for the Pro. i'm thinking an ORP may be had at MSRP or 1-3K below. Also not opposed to purchasing out of state for the right deal. Thanks for your feed back on pricing, model / type suspension and dealer recommendations ?

^So you don't intend to go off-road? RAV4 or even Corolla Cross would be better for dense NYC streets. If deep snow is a concern, the OR will be sufficient, since it has the rear locker.

When I bought my PRO in January, some dealers would give you MSRP, others wanted 2-3-5k over MSRP. I love the way my PRO rides, but for what you are planning on using it for, the ORP would be more than sufficient, especially if you want to save some money.

    Oooh look, another mod.....

Bro, the first thing you need to do is get the hell out of NYC. Make that a top priority.

OP said he was driving an hour into NYC, which means he doesn't live in NYC, and he's now retired.

Yeah it sounds like the OP lives outside of NYC.

I live in NYC and own a ‘23 4R TRD Pro. I would not recommend buying anywhere in the immediate area. I purchased mine at MSRP at Team Toyota in Princeton, NJ. They don’t do mark ups.

TRD Pro is probably overkill for your needs (and mine) but I just liked the way it looks and don’t want to mess around with mods. I do plan to do some moderate off roading with it.

Depends what your priorities are I guess. It’s not a perfect city but I enjoy being here.

I'd go the TRD Pro if you can find one. Good luck with that part.... The TRD Pro is going to have the highest level of tech too - ie all of the online connect (remote start with the App), dual climate zones, heated/ventilated seats, JBL audio and all of that type of stuff.

I'd also mention that it you're going to be on the road all of the time vs. off the road, why not also consider a Limited? We have one and the full-time 4WD is really nice. We don't see any difference in MPG's vs. our Venture and the Limited is just a great road vehicle. Drives and rides great. Superb on the highway. We do 400-500 highway miles with ours every week up and down I35 and love it.

It's your call what you do of course, but just wanted to mention that as maybe another idea to toss around. Good luck with whatever you do!

The Pro Bro is never worth it. I’d go Limited or even a Lexus product if you are just street driving it.

    wait hold up…

there are no ventilated seats in the 4Runner and the ORP comes with the same heated seats as the pro.

the only interior differences between the pro and ORP is dual climate control, auto headlights (ORP has auto high beams only) remote start, and the JBL stereo. The rest is identical. Depending on which ORP you get, also the 360° camera which is an option on the ORP.

Originally I wanted the 360° camera but now I’m glad I don’t have it. One more thing to break and when I saw what it was like, I was glad I didn’t have it.

The Limited does have heated and ventilated seats. I own one and "thought" the TRD Pro did as well. My apologies. BTW, I do understand that the OP wasn't asking about a Limited. I was the one that tossed that in just as a "Oh BTW" kind-of thought :) since the OP is on-road vs. off-road all the time.

I haven't seen anyone address OP's concern about "least amount of bounce." KDSS is the no-brainer selection for that specific concern.

You should be looking at 4R Limited, or even new Lexus GX.

I had no idea the limited gas ventilated seats. I guess makes sense since it’s the only one with leather seats that are likely perforated.

At a glance it not an easy choice. When you drive the GX460 even the smaller things like the small steering, better steering control organizing, better headunit screen placement for maps, automatic mirror adjustment when put to reverse or even easy cargo door opening, electronic 3rd row controls are very tempting.

Spending little more time I liked the way Limited suspension handle rough roads & potholes, way more ground clearance when we get snow storms, even the full gas tank skid, much more practical fuel range & mpg. Also love that 4Runner have the best engine, But GX460 engine is not bad either, was listed as honorable mention list by Mr CarCareNut.

It does and they are NICE! Can't emphasize enough how nice that vehicle is in every area. It's my wife's (the Venture is mine). On the road the Limited is great, solid and smooth, loaded with creature comforts and tech, then closer to our home (where very few of our roads are paved) it reminds us that it is still a 4Runner underneath and can handle pretty much anything we throw at it.

I vote Lexus RX for street driving. Everyone has one and you wonder why until you drive it. Damn good vehicle but that is the 22 RX350 luxury edition with everything but the parking assist. I'm not sure about the new 4banger only lineup.

If I wasn't going off road, I wouldn't buy an Off Road or Pro. It doesn't make sense unless you want the image. The "off road" bits they come with aren't useful on road, even the rear locker is a hindrance in snow (crab-walking). If the choice is between those two, buy the least expensive.

If you really want a 4Runner, the full-time AWD/t-case is what would set them apart, and that's available in the Limited. So, I'd opt for a Limited, because it's going to provide the driving experience and "tools" you'll need. The difference between the ORP and Pro is like asking yourself if you should buy a dirt bike or a different dirt bike, when what you really need is a Lexus sedan.

You don't want a 4runner. They suck for street driving. Get something like a SQ5 or X3M

Test drive with/without KDSS but without any off-road aspirations I’d probably go Highlander and save on both fuel and upfront price.

I don’t think there’s much perks in spending more for the Pro or even the OR compared to an SR5 if not heading off the beaten path.

No off-road driving, then sr5p would be great, limited is the nicest inside.
