KDSS does improve articulation, but not by a ton, not like disconnecting a Rubicon. I don't think KDSS can outwheel a non KDSS 4Runner, A-Trac is a potent tool. Fellow Jeeper here.

KDSS offroad is not equal to absent swaybar.

    KDSS flex fell short here.

Tinkerer has videos with back to back comparisons with of kdss and non kdss, I believe in the swaybar/no swaybar video. I recall max measured articulation between both was significantly different (kdss was better).

I agree that a-trac is a potent tool. But KDSS equipped 4runners have it too.

Oh, I get that (Rubicon/disconnect vs 4R/KDSS). That's why I think a 4R is maybe 80% off road capable vs Rubicon. From what I understand though, KDSS provides better articulation, and from what I know, that translates to better traction. Doesn't mean KDSS is a true disconnect, or that the limitations of the IFS vs SFA disappear, but better is better, even if it's marginally so. And, the Off Road has A-trac.

Edited to add: In fact, A-trac is what sold me on 4Runners. Driving a 4G off road and using A-trac made me realize the 4R could do more than get kids to soccer practice. As someone with quite a bit of off road experience, I never took "stock" 4R serious. That was ignorant on my part. After taking the 4G on some of the same trails I took a Rubicon, I realized the 4G had much more capability than I thought. I figure with a rear locker and good tires, and the (marginal) increase in articulation the KDSS provides, I should be able to tackle 80% of the trails I expect the Rubicon would do. My opinion.

But, honestly, I have enough experience with kdss now that I can tell the difference between a kdss 4Runner and a non kdss 4Runner crawling slow on a trail. It is not super obvious like feeling a solid axle under you doing its thing, but I can definitely feel KDSS

The E-KDSS on the new Lexus GX has more articulation and it's also quicker to engage and disengage. As much as I love my 4runner, the thing is going away. I've put a deposit on this bad boy and I can't wait. This Lexus is a phenomenal machine.

Is it going to be the first new re-geared GX on 35s???

You’ll probably have to wait for steel bumpers though, unless you get some custom fabricated :D

    Just kidding…well, kinda not really.

Putting Toyota letters on the grill, that's for sure. 6th gen 4Runner TRD off-road premium with E-KDSS
