Low mpg in new TRD pro

I got a 4runner TRD pro a few weeks ago. It has around 465 miles on it now. It had 8 miles on it when I bought it. The dealer said the mpg would improve over time. It was around 12 mpg the first week and now, 3.5 weeks later, it is up to 14.3. Will it continue to improve? Thank you!

 

I just put my 1st 100 miles on TRDOR avg 17.

I get 19 average. Driving style does matter as well.

I have a 2018 TRD PRO and after 3 tanks of gas I have gotten 18.1, 17.6 and 18.0 respectively around town. Calculated by hand. Your driving style can change your mileage, also elevation if that applies. If it doesn't improve take it to the dealer and have them check it out.

 

Thank you everyone! Here is an update. I brought the car to the dealer to have the black decals put over the chrome in the back. I mentioned the low gas mileage and they said it’s because of the intense heat. I am in Phoenix. They said it will get better.

 

i am interested in this post.. i just picked mine up 2 days ago with 3 miles on it. i will be watching the MPG. i am new to the forum and to owning a Toyota so i hope to learn a lot from the forum

 

@Thin Blue Swine Congrats on your new car! Can you post your mpg over the next week or so? Are you in a hot state? I’m now at 14.5 mpg after 4 weeks of ownership.

 

im in alabama.... 95 today with wheat index of 105...... its hot!

 

I just finished a cross country trip and avg was 19.2mpg for most of the journey.
A/C was on 90% of the time.altough it was also 90%highway cruising at 75.

 

@Thin Blue Swine @Chiefcrunchy Thanks! I think I’ll ask the service dept about it again. My driving is all city driving, no highways, no hills. I wonder why the mpg would be low if not from heat/ac. It was around 106-110 F while driving today.

 

The heat has nothing to do with reducing MPG, it's your AC or windows (drag) that reduces efficiency. It's also likely because you're stepping heavily on the gas and brake pedals. Instead of hard accelerating and braking in traffic, try driving smoothly- accelerate smoothly and slowly, anticipate when you'll be stopping and coast down slowly. There's an eco-bar in your center cluster that shows when you're driving for the best mileage. Try to do all of your driving with the bar on the left. When it transitions to the right of the bar (and blinks), you're not being as gas-efficient as you could be. I'm averaging 18.5 MPG on heavy 275 KO2s, mixed driving.

 

It does go up in winter for me. I am also in the Phoenix area. Ac does take a mpg or two away, but driving style is the biggest factor. Don’t trust the on board computer either, do your own math.

 

I average 20-21 mixed driving, at elevation, with an RTT on all the time. Unless you are running much larger tires and have a lot of armor, I don’t see how you could be getting below 17. 14mpg sounds like a real issue to me.

 

You need to reset the MPG calculator after every tank if you want an accurate representation of that tanks MPG's. Otherwise it will just keep averaging tank after tank. I figured this out the hard way too, I thought I should be getting better freeway mileage and didn't realize it needed to be reset, once I figured that out it was all good. Got around 15-18mgp combined with a lift and 285's.

My Sequoia automatically resets at ever fill up but the 10-12mpg in town is tough to swallow, just cant keep my foot out of the V8

 

@mynameistory Thanks! I tired driving as you said today, only about 16 miles though. I am a pretty aggressive driver so I’m trying to be slower, more patient and also keep the bar on the eco display to the left. But the mpg didnt budge. I have to go to the dealer tomorrow to pick up my powder coated rails, which will be almost 20 miles from work, partly freeway, so I’m hoping it will improve. I’m going to ask them about it again.

@4X4Runner I agree. It seems odd. I’m going to ask the dealer again tomorrow. I’ve filled the tank twice since I bought the car, so I dont think it’s the gas.

@COexplorer Thanks. I am going to ask the dealer. The truck is stock, so nothing heavy on it. It’s just me driving. No passengers or gear.

Don't forget, that MPG average readout is for the LIFETIME of your truck, UNLESS you reset it. Reset it when you want to get a reading for your current drive.

 

my 2016 4runner stock tires now in the warm summer or when I go south in the winter get 20MPG.. I am now getting 20 MPG 90F air temps..

so when the cold winter hits I get around 14MPG.. temps in the 20F range and when it hits zero 12-13 MPG ..so I drive down south in 2 days 1700miles and 20 MPG.. warm and better MPG ..
perhaps the cold air is more dense so more friction on these brick designed vehicles ..LOL..

I have a 17 Pro. Have not reset it since I bought it. My average is showing 18 mpg. I don’t drive it much unless I need to. Only has 4000 miles on it.

 

I have had mine for 13 months now, and my avg mpg almost always shows 17.8 on the readout from the multi display. When I pull my boat it drops a few mpg.

 

Thanks guys. This is disheartening! My car is at 14.8 mpg now. The service center said to let the engine break itself in and not to worry, it’s also because of the AC. I am going to read the owners manual this weekend to reset the mpg reading.

 

@4X4Runner Thanks! There’s nothing on the floor of the car. In fact, the car is spotless (trying to keep new as long as I can!). I have the maintenance contract and warranty. Maybe I will bring it to my local Toyota service center (different than the one I bought the car at) for a second opinion.

 

LOL @4X4Runner I was wondering what pedal you were referring to. I tend to drive fast, but I dont think it’s enough to affect the gas mileage this badly. I’ve been trying to keep it in the eco range over the last day or so.
