See no justification to take a hit with the 6th Gen T4R just to save on gas mileage.
    With unproven engine.

This is the complexity I wouldn't want. This engine bay is so jam packed, Toyota had to mount the vehicles battery inside. It's in the back on the drivers side where on the 5th Gen resides the jack etc. Then they stuffed the cargo bay with the hybrid battery. It would have been so much better had they used a turbo V6 and no hybrid.

But don't forget the 6th Gen comes with an air compressor built in. Pretty sure those who are serious off road will still need to get an air compressor because I seriously doubt the neat air compressor that comes from Toyota will be even close to what an ARB is. Maybe it will be good for the casual non off road users so that would be a plus for them.

well at least its easily accessible. have you seen some locations oem have put the battery? you need a lift, or remove a tire to get to some of them.

See now that's another great feature that 6th gen 4R offers. Classic two steps forward one step back

I’m not afraid of turbo or hybrid. Used turbo engines for long time without a single turbo failure. My point is that it’s not enough for ME to change from 2023 SR5P anytime soon. There is a huge price difference I guarantee. Don’t feel like taking a loss there. The other is the fuel economy improvements which is more than likely negligible in real life scenario. So let’s say it would cost me $10,000 to upgrade. That can buy a lot of fuel even if the new version would give 5 mpg more in average. I could have bought a GLS or X7 but didn’t really care about the high tech (I’m not an old guy) and wanted something simple. To me this generation is like if Mercedes-Benz would still make the W124 E class from 1994 and you can buy it new. Simple but functional.
I personally don’t need a tablet in my car nor a digital cluster. What I use and like CarPlay, heated seats and steering wheel plus no panoramic sunroof. Even if I'm not a mechanic I feel comfortable when it comes to maintenance or repair. Basic stuff is easy on this and if something more complicated comes up any corner mechanic can assist. I would not touch anything around those orange wires for sure.
I know everyone is different and most people like the new gadgets and toys but to me it’s a vehicle to serve me and my family for long time.

Thank you for saying this. I’ve never understood why people think a manually engaged transfer case is somehow superior or more reliable in the 4R considering that an actuator is still needed to engage their front axle for 4WD.

Edit to add: I also currently daily drive an ‘06 Tacoma that I bought in 2011 with 18k miles. I’ve “exercised” the 4WD about once every 6-12 months going up my 300’ gravel driveway. At 185k miles it still goes into 4HI easily every time, and 4LO about 75% of the time without having to back up. All actuators.

I love my 2023 ORP Premium but I see myself wanting a 6th gen 4R or a Lexus GX in a 3-4 year timeframe. Hopefully, the issues would have been sorted out by then.

The front grille of the 2025 4R seems weird, but overall I like the styling, and I think I'll like the drivetrain.

Because you don’t have to open it as often as the 4Runner’s. We don’t have time looking for a button or key when in a hurry to fill it up every other morning. :D

Compared to the rollout of the Tacoma, San Diego felt like they slapped it together on their lunch hour.

One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 34 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 32yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
So far I like the colors and the power hatch…that’s it.
Now if a manual trans was available with a naturally aspirated engine I might take it up with my better half.

Yah that engine bay looks pretty crazy for a Toyota. My 4th gen looks so simple compared to that noise.

    For comparison

Even mine with a Maggie looks much simpler. I've got tons of room leftover for another battery, ARB Compressor and electrical control center.

I'm thinking real world driving, the 6th gen is going to be barely better than the 5th gen. The big difference will be that the torque peak is at a usable RPM, unlike the 4.0 which you have to flog past 4K to get anywhere.

Hopefully once the hybrids are out they do a little bit better.

Well the peak torque doesn’t worth 10k for me. My first car was probably 55HP and I survived, arrived everywhere and felt like a king (sometimes) when shared the backseat with a girl.

Now that the options have been revealed, I'm leaning toward option C, LC 1958.

For me 5th 4Runner was a clear choice and I moved in to buy as soon as it was leaked that 4-cyl turbo engine would be in 6th. It turned out even worse, as there is hybrid on some trims. If I wanted Prius, I would have ordered one.

Why this matters to me. I am not opposed to a turbo engine on a sports car, on a utility vehicle the only turbo I would accept is turbo-diesel. Gasoline engine turbo is a serious reliability liability - you have a low displacement, high compression, high heat engine that is stressed. You have to deal with heat, you have to deal with lubrication, you have to deal with additional coolers - all of this can and does fail out of warranty, expensive parts and lots of work to replace. All THAT hassle so I can get few MPG if and only if I feather the throttle to stay off boost everywhere? No thanks!

I really don't like tablet glued on dash interface. I find it irksome and an eye sore. Give me buttons so I can do most things without looking and with my gloves on. More so, screens tend to act up in extreme cold and I don't want to be forced to park the car in the garage or risk being unable to change stations in the morning.

I really don't like plastic fender flares. This is an old and ugly trend that came back, I still remember that these TRAP DIRT and CAUSE RUST where plastic meets sheet metal.

Last but not least. Start and stop. Having your car stall at random times only to jarringly start at other times is beyond annoying. Gas savings are minuscule, but both inconvenience and needless wear and tear are significant. No thanks!

What do you think going to happen to all this piping, plastic electric connectors, and plastic parts in a cramped engine bay of a turbo-car (i.e., it will be hot) in a few years? Good luck changing your spark plugs without breaking anything.

I've put my current 4th gen through all kinds of fun and surprisingly, the hoses and clips in the bay have held up incredibly well. But I did see a vid from car care nut and he said Toyota switched to these new unique Toyota-designed plastic clips for hoses and he said their junk and will not last compared to the old school metal ones they've been using for years.
