Have these engines not been around since 2017? Are they imploding on a regular basis? I thought lexus uses them so again I'm confused why the doom and gloom

World news is a bit light on the gloom right now. But people need that fix.

I actually want engine stats with all the doom and gloom though not opinions. Opinions are like assholes , everyone has them

350K miles on my Honda Civic turbo and never had a single issue. I get it’s not a larger SUV, but turbos have come a long way. You planning on keeping the vehicle to a million miles?

Not to mention throwing bigger tires on always lowers fuel economy that’s nothing new.

@Trident904 ! I always love the cockpit color you add.

Point me to your thoughts on the 6th gen? I’m too poor to consider it seriously, unless I sell my 3rd gen Tacoma. Which will be hard to do.

but my two boys are big and getting bigger and my backseat is small and not changing. Hah.

Platinum trim seems to share the same black accent concept as the Tundra. I wish they would make a TRD Pro with color matched fender flares. Probably will be my first “‘mod” if I decide to go with the pro.

Totally just made an account to ask this; but Everest and Mudbath colors are totally going to be Trailhunter and TRDP exclusive, aren’t they? Dealership didn’t have any info when I placed my hold early haha.

Keep the 3rd gen Taco. It’s the same interior dimensions at the 4R almost, less the rear enclosed cargo space. I regretted not having a truck when I got rid of my Tacoma and I recently bought an F150 to fill that void since my 4R isn’t my daily.

As far as my thoughts on the 6th gen, it’s nice looking, I like the design of it, I just don’t like the turbo engine and all the tech for a vehicle that is historically an offroad monster. Everything seems to be trending toward the Baja style high speed offroad and overland and us crawlers are getting left out of the mix on the new equipment. It’s “whatever” I guess and I’m just old and crotchety and don’t require Nannie’s to help me drive. I really feel like Toyota has a solid and loyal enough group of followers to develop a vehicle that competes with Jeep (shitty vehicles) in the more hardcore offroad market but they just aren’t and it’s sad. The 4th Gen Taco and 6th Gen 4R, to me, are going in the opposite direction from what the longtime Toyota loyalists truly want.

And the AI robot in the passenger seat will be connected to a qubit based quantum computer in the cloud. Beware of that...

    Toyota:
Let's give those tall westerners more room in the drivers seat, but squeeze the rear seat space for their tall children, and decrease the cargo sleeping length for them all!

ugh that setup looks really good in silver which i prefer (hides surface dirt really good and my last 2-3 4runners have been silver), but the heritage blue looks really tempting (to piss off the wife since any shade of lighter blue than blueprint is her favorite color) and the everest green is the bomb (but i know it will be exclusive to the trail hunter only)

dealerdaily wont have any selection screens until probably september maybe august. initial batches will start shipping in october/november (non allocation reserve requests) for arrivals at dealers in usa in november/december since they take about 1-2 months via RORO ships from japan.

Getting my blood pressure rising over a vehicle I am probably not going to buy due to alternatives in Lexus/toyota being better. I think it speaks to how much of a following this vehicle has and how much, at least some of us, think Toyota messed it up.
but yes we have no life ;)

Actually you did pretty much say turbos where bad:
And I pointed out that turbodiesels in heavy trucks, trains and ships run in pretty much constant boost for 100s of thousands of miles/hours under much heavier load than our little 4x4 and don't "wear out fast" Point is turbos work very well if designed right and are a technology that's been evolving for close to 90s years now.The article I linked talks about all the engineering improvements in the last 30 years that makes turbos so ubiquitous and much more drivable and reliable than they where in the 80s. If you are an engineer as you claim you would find it very interesting if you cared to read it (the online copy is a little chopped up, I read it in the paper edition of R&T)

I'm curious what school you got your engineering degree from? (I got my BS.ME. from RPI, class of 99). Unless you are just having a hard time articulating what you are tying to say your point reads like a fundamental misunderstand of what efficiency is.

Efficiency is a measure of what % of the energy input is turned into useful work. No matter how efficient a machine is, asking it to do more work is going to require more fuel input. You cant have a truch that gets 18mpg moving 6000lb and expect it to get the same 18mpg moving 7000 no matter what the drive system is. Thats basically expecting it to be a perpetual motion machine.

MPG ratings for cars are economy statistics... that single number in isolation tell us nothing about the thermodynamic efficiency of the vehicle because they are not measured against size. I can build a 50lb scooter with a tiny 2 stroke engine that spits half the gas unburned out the exhaust and it may get 100mpg, but is actually horrible inefficient in a miles per gallon per ton of weight moved. Now take 200 of those scooters, pack them into a Kenworth 18wheeler that gets 5mpg and you will burn LESS fuel per scooter per mile traveled. And that's because the turbo diesel engine in the Kenwoth is significantly more thermally efficient - probably 35%+ vs. the dirty 2 stroke on the scooter that is 10% at best.

BTW, the reason your son's Bronco lost 2mpg gallon with the bigger tires likely has very little to do with the weight (and extra 100lb on a 6500 lb vehicle wont make such a difference) and very much to do with the increased rolling resistance (drivetrain drag) of those tires. Again a concept that a mechanical or aero engineer should understand well as we learned it in our 1st years statics and dynamics courses from undergrad.

    Sometimes it feels that way.

But, I'm usually out of town as many weekends as I'm home all summer, so I'm keeping pretty busy. This is just fill in entertainment.
