in case anyone wants to know, the 4runner has the same feature as the new tacoma, open door, engine doesnt shut off on remote start.

if that is the case, i imagine the credit card access key will also transfer over instead of using a fob.

Modern turbos have little in common with the ones that gave them a bad rap in the 80s.

Read this very informative piece from the Dec 2022 R&T: https://issuu.com/thomasswift/docs/road_track_-_december_2022/s/17287818

No, I’m an Aerospace engineer, and I’ve been building race cars, engines, and offroad vehicles for 30 years and understand the dynamics of it. No amount of engineering or gearing trumps physics.

I understand the turbine blades in the exhaust path can spin at 200k rpms. It would seem just centrifugal force could rip the blades apart over time. Is it true?

These engines are no different than the Ford ecoboost engines. They are all built on the same principle, efficiency. Add weight, efficiency drops. My son has a 23 Bronco Wildtrak, and we added 35x12.50 RT Trails to it and the fuel economy dropped by 2mpg over the stock 315x75’s due to the extra weight and he’s generating around 2 PSI of boost constantly at 70mph when on the stocks the boost dropped to zero and occasionally bumped as needed. Toyota has in no way figured out a magical plan to make a turbo engine under constant boost load remain fuel efficient. No one has.

Any machine will eventually fail under constant load outside it’s design parameters.

Nobody gives the 1KZ crap for having a turbo, I don't see why we should assume this one will break. My biggest criticism is that the block uses non-replaceable sleeves, but the 1GR was also deficient in this way. Iron blocks transmit less vibration too, but Toyota doesn't sell iron block engines in the US anymore.

Are there any photos of what the non-hybrid 4runner looks like under the hood?

LOL, okay. Not a comparison, an example based on design similarities. An engine is an engine and these I-force max engines are built similarly to the eco boost engines. The design tech is not proprietary.

No, because I’m sitting at 45,000 feet over the North Atlantic right now bored off my ass while my right seater is in the crew lav taking a shit.

I’ll just let the fanboi’s figure it out for themselves when they build their 6th gen’s and then start whining about shitty gas mileage. Happens with every T4R and Tacoma owner that doesn’t understand physics.

I guess they forgot to tell the turbo diesel truck engines that r drive 500,000 miles between overhauls that turbos are bad…

BYW, I’m a mechanical engineer. But that fact alone doesn’t mean anything to this discussion as I don’t happen to work for Toyota designing engines.

and that makes replying to my posting of an informative article on this subject of technological improvements in turbos with a completely irrelevant comment that has nothing to do with Toyota “OK” how exactly?

Lol, did I say turbos were bad? No, I didn’t. I have a drag car with twins and I love it. All I said was building these 4 bangers the way Toyota folks do, is going to make some folks unhappy when they are seeing low fuel economy.

Do you really think that anyone with half a brain is going to expect to get good mileage with an extra 1000# bolted on and oversized tires?

Yes, some of them are pretty silly. But, a lot of them are about changes in MPGs, or maybe how to improve it.

The majority of people here seem to understand what's going to happen when they start adding stuff.

I don't know how it is on FB groups because FB pretty much sucks for anything other than looking at pictures of everyone's dinner, and bragging about how much yard work you did.

I don't know what it's like now, but Yamaha had their hands in the 3SGTE, 3M, and others I think.
