Well, it’s interesting. Glad I bought a ‘24! But it certainly looks like Toyota put some real effort into this new generation.

There were A LOT of doubters for sure!! How ludicrous to have thought Toyota would screw up the redesign of this ICONIC vehicle.

What’s he referring to “battery packs” under the rear?

And why is the start battery in the rear inside the cab?

They screwed up the entire cargo and seat configurations and foldability pretty badly as well as rear seat leg room.

Most ridiculous thing I've ever seen from them. I hope those letters are removable and not part of the molded plastic. For TRD Pro models I did a count...

    TRD Pro Badging Total: 13

TRD Pro on steering wheel (1)
TRD Pro on interior of each door (2)
TRD Pro on each running board (2)
TRD Pro on each side of the hood (2)
TRD Pro on the skid plate
TRD Pro on the rear (1)
TRD Pro on the auxiliary button (1)

TRD on the air filter housing (1)

    Pro on each headlight (2)

Toyota on front, rear, and dash (3)

    iForceMax on rear (1)

Nickel-metal Hydride hybrid battery for the i-Force Max.

Looks like the engine bay is stuffed as it is.

Edit: After looking at more pictures it looks like the non hybrid version still has the 12v battery in the engine bay.

Battery inside protects it from the elements, helping it last longer.

    And they are big.

Toyota certainly could have done worse. I think many people will like this new version of the 4Runner. I'm glad I got my 4Runner when I did, but if I was interested in one of these new iForce Max 4 cyl turbo Hybrid vehicles I'd be looking at the new Land Cruiser.

Side profile baller. Hate the tail lights, but they looks cool when they are on. Front looks micro angry aggressive, like Jeep 'angry eyes'. It's fine I guess. More 4th gen esque than 5th gen. It will be hard to say no to 24mpg. And we will see if 35s fit with less work. That is the real sell

I think it looks fine! Primary reason I bought the 2021 4R was to be able to remove the rear seats and comfortably sleep inside of it for long distance mountain bike trips. Looks like the floor space is elevated in the rear of the new 6th gen 4R / less head space.

Removing seats and sleeping in it isn't important, it has plenty of cargo space.

THIS ^^^! The rear seat fold down configuration and the cargo space was one of the primary selling points for me. I kept a 1997 Jeep Cherokee that I bought new until 2020 - for the same reason (that old Cherokee actually folded flat even better than the 4Runner). I think that there will be (as with most things in life) some great improvements with this new model and some other beloved things that are lost in the winds of change.

Don't forget - "...it has plenty off cargo space..." for you.

Maybe not for others. Personally, that massive hump in the rear cargo area for the batteries, combined with the massive hump created by folding the rear seat flat, or the massive space taken up by the rear seats tumbled forward, are deal breakers. That's taking 4-8" of cargo space out of the floor of the truck. It matters if you ever camp in your truck.

If you don't, then you're good, no problem.

If I wanted to lose cargo space to problems caused by vehicle engineering, I'd go back to a Wrangler with it's annoying rollbar.

I thought Toyota would really step up to the plate on this one. With Ford coming out with the very capable Bronco iterations I thought Toyota would build something truly exciting. Where's the 35" tire option, extreme approach and departure angles. Instead...........they made the break over angle less capable that the 5th Gen by increasing the wheelbase. WTH! Gone is the manual transfer case shifter and I didn't notice but are there even disconnecting sway bar controls? In an age of the rise in popularity of overlanding and off roading why did they not cater to that? They could have greatly reduced the approach and departure angles and done so many other things to make it far more off road capable. Other manufacturers have. There are already tons of vehicles that are adequate to choose from and it sure looks like Toyota failed to make anything special. So far it looks like they missed a golden opportunity.

Toyota is way to conservative for that. They stick with tried-and-proven concepts.

You're probably 100% correct. Had they built a vehicle like I mentioned above, the entire off road/overlanding world would have gone bonkers. They wouldn't have been able to keep them in stock for decades. Instead, we got red Toyota Racing Development stickers and badges all over the place.

I have to stop now, lol, I'm sounding like I'm on a rant rather than just disappointed. My 23 4Runner was on my bucket list and to keep for a long time. I'm very happy with what I've got. I think most people who get a 6th Gen will be happy with theirs too.

Most people will enjoy a 6th gen. A few of us would love a 70-series. Very few of us.

I'm really liking the look of the 6th gen. The powertrain will hopefully be just as reliable on the long term as the 4L V6 in the 5th gen. What transmission does it have?

My wife likes how aggressive the 6th gen looks and this may be a replacement for her Acadia maybe in 2026 or 2027.
