understand. The new tacoma has HUD option so I assume the 4 runner would as well.

scratch that... I was thinking about the tundra.

They could put more information in the gauge cluster so it's not so far out of the way.

It's like getting in an argument about how large a TV in the operating room should be when the real debate is why the hell are they watching TV when they're suppose to be doing something so important.

They can put the radio and volume controls in the wheel, and display map and media info in the gauge cluster. No matter how large they make the screen, and how large they make the controls on it, it'll never be as safe as never having to take your hands off the wheel and you're eyes off the road. So they should just do that.

The window checks one 'must have' off the list, now let's see if it's still being made in Japan.

I call them billboards. They belong along side the road.

That's extremely unlikely for so many reasons. The 4runner is North America exclusive so making it in Mexico makes sense, the price has to be less than the LCP and that would be difficult to do in Japan, the Tahara factory is already making the Land Cruiser / LCP, and the factory in Mexico is making the Tacoma which everything points to being identical to the 4runner.

The interior looks more made in Mexico Tacoma than made in Japan Land Cruiser Prado. If you want something made in Japan then you'll have to buy the LCP.

One thing this also disproves is the hope that the roof would be removable since it's going to be more like a Tacoma than ever before. I think this is a mistake, if there isn't anything big to distinguish it from the LCP then the 4runner becomes a budget LC instead of it's own thing. Give it a removable roof, or a solid axle, or a SWB 2 door version and nobody is going to say it's a budget Land Cruiser.

It's like business 101, don't make 2 different products that go after one customer base, one will always cannibalize the other.

A true heads up display is directly in your line of vision. That big screen is not, which makes it a distraction. Actually, it might be an eye magnet, diminishing safety.

just wait until you see the TRD model with "TRD Pro" written on the steering wheel, both doors, the seats, and multiple places on the outside. :D

I agree the design of the interior looks like something from 10+ years ago. They could have integrated things a bit more and still retained a row of buttons and knobs.

Only issue with that is you’re still looking down while traveling 100 feet per second in a 6,000 pound piece of steel.

Yeah, I'm still puzzled by how the higher spec 4Runners won't be competing with the LC.

The bigger touch-screen is to keep your eyes constricted while driving. I noticed this in my friend's Infinity. The screen is so bright you cant really see outside the window at night.lol

Well that's one way to keep making it in Japan and still not overlap with the LC(P) and keep price down a bit, if it doesn't come with the hybrid components. Frankly I would be okay with that.

Talked with a 30yr+ mechanic today whom I've known since I was a kid. Told him about the new 4Runners coming out.

He said if they offer a non-hybrid version, get the non-hybrid, or buy the last non-hybrid model. Told him people already doing that. Lol

Asked him why, he said the hybrid stuff just adds more shit to work on (lol) and the gas mileage won't be that much better. He's an old school guy tho, and drives a Toyota Camry.

Out of all the car makers Toyota is one maker that I trust with hybrid drivetrains.

That being said, for a offroader like the 4Runner, I agree with the mechanic, the simpler and lighter the better. Those who want better MPGs from hybrids already have the LCP and Sequoia to choose from.

Detuning is nothing new. That's one way to differentiate them, they'll be a write up on how to remedy it for sure.

It's just fucking pointless, if they could produce something other than a fixed roof mid size 4 door suv with an IFS and an automatic transmission they wouldn't have to resort to stupid tricks like this to differentiate the two.

There are so many ways to make a body on frame vehicle interesting and different, and yet Toyota chooses to differentiate one by handicapping the other.

Within the US automotive regulatory framework that is set to kick in in the next decade, we are lucky there is a BOF 4Runner at all, and didn't go the way of unibody Pathfinders, Explorers, and Blazers.

They will stop producing the 5th gen and people will have no choice but to buy the 6th gen. The number of midsize BOF SUV is very low now, Wrangler and Broncos are the only realistic rivals in town and Toyota is the only maker with reputation for reliability still playing in the segment.
