Hi, I am changing the timing and water pump on my 96 4Runner 3.4. Along with the tensioner idler and all the sensors. I ordered the damper tool to hold the harmonic balance while I break the bolt loose on the crankshaft, but the harmonic balance is stripped I guess. There's so much torque on it that the breaker bar was about to snap and instead of breaking loose it started turning with the crankshaft and the harmonic balancer didn't move as if it stripped. What other technique can I use to get this bolt broke loose? Any help would be much appreciated.

I've used a 1/2" drive breaker bar, propped it against a frame rail, and used the starter to break the bolt loose. or you can use a chain wrench as a holder. though by the looks of things you might also have trouble getting the rest of the pulley off. BTW, don't worry about putting the belt back on, engine is not a valve bender.

Yes, I tried to break loose with bumping the starter, no luck. I'm going to get a chain wrench and try this.thanks for the response.

The one I have is 24", similar to the OTC 6969 found on Amazon, gotten me out of many a jam.

Alright I got the balancer off finally after I found the biggest chain wrench I could find at Northern Tool and 8 incher. And it slid right off once I got the Bolt broke loose.
I have another question about this. I've turned the crankshaft while the belt was off so much that I don't remember which way or how much it has rotated, I line the two dots up on the bottom is there a chance that I will be out 180 or it doesn't matter? Thanks for the advice.

as long as you line up the timing marks your okay. DO check the timing gear though, the have been known to wear at the key slot.
