No. This is Toyota being conservative actually. Late 2000s was the peak of Toyota hegemony, and it ended with their recall crisis in 2010.

Is the needle bearing still an issue after all these years?

^Statistically it probably isn't, which is why Toyota kept it.

My 5th gen with stock suspension is fine after 149k. My 3rd gen Tacoma is lifted 3" and never got vibes, but I put in the ECGS bushing anyway at 18k when I upgraded to RCV axles. Buddy's 3rd gen Tacoma is also lifted 3" and never got vibes for 63k.

Wonder if 2024 4Runners also got the defective parts? You know, since the front diffs are more or less the same.

I'm at almost 170k on my 2013, and I haven't had an issue with it.

Going to lift 2" as part of a much needed suspension refresh, hopefully that doesn't trigger it.

lol, my last four vehicles have been all last model year vehicles. I agree 100%.
I want vehicles as simple as possible. All that jazz is no good if it breaks so easily.
I do wonder however, if this is a uniquely new problem with toyota, or did earlier generations of tacomas, tundras etc had such issues out the gate.

Next year, I'll be lifting mine 2" in the front, which will level it out exactly. Already bought a Trail Gear bushing just in case.

This would be under the 5/60 powertrain warranty. If you haven't blown the front diff in that time, chances are it didn't have this particular mfg defect

Traded my 5th gen 4Runner for a 2021 Tundra for increased towing and road trip comfort. The Tundra delivered, but is a giant tank. Gas mileage is about the same. But the daily driving is awful in the Tundra. It is simply too big and long and wide. I hate driving it around town and I hate driving it in the woods.

I decided that I would trade it in on the new Land Cruiser. But, at $58k starting prices, it was just too much.

So I looked at the new Tacoma and 4Runner with the new platform and turbo 4cyl motors. I saw the TFL video of their new TRD Off-Road Tacoma and was impressed. It was better than my old 5th Gen 4Runner in terms of power and tech, and it looked cool. I thought that maybe the new 6th gen 4Runner would be worth waiting for.

Then I saw the infamous video of the catastrophic failure of the front diff. My `19 SR5 with 33" tires never had a single issue in some pretty gnarly conditions.

Now, I am looking at buying a 2024 TRD Off-Road Premium 4Runner so I can get the last example of a Japanese-built, bullet proof, capable and reliable, 4Runner that will likely ever exist.

I love the new styling of the Tacoma, and it has some great upgrades in terms of technology. But, in these days of uncertain futures and everything getting worse and more expensive, I will put my money on the old 5th gen 4Runner.

^New TFL video says the ADD collar sheared:

    https://youtu.be/eLGFJm8hnlo?t=853
It's probably a manufacturing defect i.e. the collar sheared at a torque much lower than designed. What do you think the chances are of the same defective part in 2024 4Runners, since the front diffs are basically the same and likely built on the same line (Hino plant in Thailand)? :stirthepot:

There are however other infant mortality issues reported with the 4th gen Tacoma which don't affect the 4Runner, like active grille shutters stuck closed and front shock shaft punching through the top hat.

Interesting Toyota took their entire differential. Naturally, they did not let these guys take pics of the broke part(s).

Why would they not? Their approach for needle bearing issue is swapping the whole diff

    Anecdotal. I'm 3 for 4 in 5th gen 4Runners since 2015; as in - 75% of the 4Runners I have owned had a needle bearing failure.

(which I realize is also anecdotal LOL)

The first one was fixed under used CPO warranty at maybe 50k (?), one I traded in without fixing, and the other one I installed the ECGS bushing.

Nice 2024 4Runner you got there, would be a shame if the same ADD collar broke...

Ha nah… you know how hard it is to pause a go to market plan for hardware? esp something as complex as a car!?

that cost to pause a planned launch, all tens of thousands of people being impact, just is not worth the effort.

This the reality of the real world
