if it sounds like I'm whining I am because I haven't complained about it until now LOL. I still like my 4Runner it's very capable machine. I did put a K&N filter in it air filtermy first oil change was at 2700 I'm at 4300 now.

First step is eliminate the chance it's bad/cheap gas. Start using Shell, Mobil, Chevron, etc. gas. 87 octane. Monitor from there.

You went larger tires over stock so they are heavier which will reduce mileage on a vehicle already not known for good mileage. No filter or add on will help with mileage and 91 may see a slight improvement if your state has ethanol free 91 but it's not going to be a drastic improvement. Driving habits affect mileage the most.

Higher octane won't help but use good quality gas as mentioned above
Air up your tires a bit (35-38) and drive around without a heavy foot.

Report back on what your mileage is then.

With a lift and those big, heavy tires your MPG will plummet. Perhaps consider using a more economical vehicle for daily driving such as a Toyota Corolla and save the 4Runner for off-road use.

Driving style plays a huge part into gas milage, I get 16.5ish, my wife struggles to get 12.

We even had a contest to see if she could get 15 on the same route. She could barely muster 13.

Keep your foot out of it at low speeds and your milage should improve.

    Yes it does.

If you find ethanol-free gas it would help slightly.

Maybe where you live. The only station I know of around me with ethanol-free gas charges more than a dollar more per gallon. It would take a serious mpg improvement to offset $20+ per tankful for ethanol-free.

Technically, the OP asked how to improve mileage, not how to do so economically.

Ask around your COSTCO, mine has a car enthusiast manager and they have ethanol-free premium that is not widely advertised as such. I tested to confirm.

Are you using an aftermarket roof rack? Are you loaded with weight? Junk in the trunk, armor, etc? What tires and wheels are you using? Some tires and wheels weigh more than others.

I get 10-12mpg on the average. Running 34s, Gobi rack, armor, winch etc. My lead foot doesn’t help either.

I would say bad driving habits, larger tires, armor and aftermarket roof racks are usually the main culprits with getting poor MPGs.

Focus on the ECO light. The longer it stays on, the higher the mpg will be. ECO light is everything.

I'll do that. I get my gas at the local Costco.

    Oooh look, another mod.....
I don't understand this. I have a 12 inch lift, 44 inch tires and 400lbs of armor on my truck, and I get 28MPG! I'm shocked that messing with the center of gravity and rolling resistance of tires impacts miles per gallon.

This is counter productive. That oil could lead to coating of the MAF sensor, which could also lead to poor fuel economy. And really, let's be real. That K&N doesn't do shit. Better off going with OEM filters.

This could be part of your problem. I would clean your MAF sensor, and get rid of that oiled filter.

I am consistently at 18.5 mpg on a stock 2021 Pro and a conservative foot! Added weight and a heavy foot will severely impact the MPG's.
