Hood Scoop Water Leak

I recently installed a black OEM hood scoop on my ORP. The install was rather… easy and uneventful. I installed new oem gaskets matching my original hood scoop in positioning, and there are already marks on the OEM where the gaskets go. So again, fairly straight forward. Three clips and four nuts. So, easy.

This morning after a rain I decided to check for leaks and my hood heat carpeting was damp. I decided to pour water on the hood scoop and sure it leaks.

in some ways, it’s no surprise that it leaks. I didn’t think those gaskets were great when I saw them. Four rubber pieces and at the top, even with gaps in between them. And at the bottom just a long cushioned strip, not rubber (the rest are rubber).

But I never imagined it would leak as much as it does.

knowing what I know about how it’s installed I can probably think of a number of ways to prevent it from leaking.

but I’m curious if anyone is willing to hose theirs down and see if your carpeting gets damp?

Based on everything I know, mine was probably already leaking prior to the swap, but I never bothered to pay attention.

Here’s what it looks like underneath. You can see from the dirt that my original one was sealed quite well but there’s plenty evidence of gaps and even dust making its way through.

 

I think the gasket is more of a insulator than a seal since the engine the engine compartment isn't sealed from water.

 

That’s a good point. If the hood scoop was real and allowed air, then it would naturally also allow water. It might be more of an insulator against scratching. But, weird to let it soak the carpeting like that.

 

My 2013 Trail has the scooped hood, but did not come with the under hood insulation.

I don't know if the newer ones come with it, or if it's still factory omitted from the scooped hood for this reason.

 

Since don’t have insulation, it would be fairly easy for you to check it out if you pour 1/4 water bottle on some of its corners.

I have an orp with hood scoop and with the carpet.

I've seen recently chatter about hood scoop leaks it sounds like they all leak to an extent from factory.
I can see staining on my insulated carpet from water.

Been pouring the past couple days
Dry to the touch…who knows underneath but nothing visible or tangible to indicate waters getting in…plain old stock hood scoop, 16’

 

Clean that engine cover !

 

good riddance…lol I think I did once n it just revealed more crap the deeper I dove, or it had that weird lingering debris from insects trying to nest

It dries fairly quickly. Mine was damp this morning and was dry after a 15 minute drive to Costco. You’d gotta pour, give it 30 seconds. Then touch.

 

Bump - anyone able to do me a solid and pour some water on your scoop all around (primarily the front two most corners) and let me know if it seems in? Would greatly appreaciate it.

Mine definitely leaks. The sound insulation has soap stains that have gone all the way through it from touchless car washes, and it’s also soaks into it after hand washing the car.

I thought about sealing it, but a less than perfect sealant application might make water pool in any low spot along the cutout area. Not sure though since I havent taken a good look in that area. It’s probably better to let it drain through.

My friend’s 2022 has the carpet insulator and it’s very visibly stained from water intrusion from the scoop.

In a recent forum post someone said if the truck is parked facing downhill, it has a greater tendency to leak into the engine compartment in rain.

 

If any leaked, it wasn't enough to make the hood insulation feel definitively wet. It was cold, though. Water sat pooled in the seam without appearing to soak through.

 

Good to know. Thanks. Those seals don’t seem to have the intent to prevent water. Too thin, lousy. They seem more like to prevent vibrations and scratches. The insulation on tail lights for instance, that’s the real deal. High density large piece of foam.

 

Thank you for checking. Sometimes, it just hangs out on top of the insulation without penetrating and then slides away. And sometimes it can just penetrate. I think, it just depends on how and where it lands.

if you pour, then open the hood and pay attention to the windshield/hood area, you may see water come out of the insulation or from the drainage of the hood.

 

Most of what I saw was coming from the front and back of the hood. I didn't see any coming from the insulation, but it wouldn't have been very much anyway. Tomorrow I'll be starting a road trip in heavy rain, so that could be another data point. I don't see any discoloration from previous road trips in heavy rain. That doesn't mean water never gets in, though.

 

The seam of the hood scoop? Or down in the insulator after making it past the scoop?

 

Everything I could see that didn't immediately flow off the hood was sitting in the seam of the hood scoop and not appearing to seep through and down into the insulation. When I opened the hood to look inside, most of it flowed off the hood's rear edge by the windshield wipers. The insulation on mine is fixed well to the hood and is quite flush on the front and sides. Small amounts of water that collect on its upper surface will probably come out the in the same area, but could conceivably drain out the front, too.

Chances are, if I get any water penetration in actual use, it's a small amount that gets absorbed into the insulator and evaporates in the heat of the engine compartment.

We'll see when I stop for gas this afternoon in the pouring rain.

 

Hey @djwantke - are you able to take that hose and scoop for a whirl? I went to the dealer to see some cars in their lot, and honestly, the way mine fits it’s identical to the rest of them so fairly certain they’re all gonna have the same behavior but trying to confirm.

They leak with enough water. It's not a big deal. The rubber strip is more to prevent plastic on metal rubbing
