I have a 2013 SR5 4 Runner with the fancy painted "limited" version Rocker Panels. I am wondering if a standard type of Nerf bar or protection bar for a stock SR5 will bolt up to mine without any mods.

There are 3 brackets on each side about 26" apart, each have 2 bolts in them. The panels I have now stick down around 5" and I don't want to destroy them on a rock $$$. I'm looking for a simple bolt on replacement that doesn't stick down so far and if it gets wacked I don't care so much. Not looking for a step or slider just a simple bar/ semi-protection type of thing.

    Thanks for any feedback!!

What you're describing is just how the latest Limited rocker panels are. Steps that work on Off Road or current SR5 models don't usually work on Limiteds unless the rocker panels are removed.

Swap the limited rockers to trail/Sr5/trd rockers. Then you can use any step/slider.

Other option is to trim the limited rocker to same size as non-limited rocker.

Hello! I know this thread is quite old, but I'm hoping you may be able to tell me. Are the rocker panels all interchangeable? I have a 21 Limited and the lack of running board options is killing me. Can I just swap them out for rocker panels without having to make a bunch of other modifications?
    Thank you!!

At the 8:00 mark, he shows the part numbers for the Toyota replacement rocker panels that are black.

You could also hit up @Daytonaviolet, as he has done this to his Limited also.

Sorry to revive this from the dead, I need to make sure I have all the parts to do this type of swap out to add steps on the side of my runner.
I have found all the parts below through researching and just want to make sure I am not missing something since they are all mail order parts.
I have a 2013 SR5 with the large rocker panel that I want to remove for steps.

I don't suppose you'd be interested in trimming your existing rockers, ala @Harringbr99? He sure did a great job, and saved a ton by not replacing parts:

This would be a good option if I have the correct measurements and could make the bottom look decent. I want to get boards that are lower than the rock slides for her to step in easier. I'm in Utah so it would be a pain to try to get with someone that is out of state for this.

All true. I suppose following @Daytonaviolet and what he did and proposed would be the ticket, then. I noticed that your list has a couple more items than he recommended, though...mudguards.

perhaps I didn’t list all the items. I think your list looks good. Most likely you can return what you didn’t use

Excited to hear how this goes for your...and see the finished product. I just picked up a "24 Limited myself and I'm definitely interested in doing this. Just need to see what mine looks like after the new TRD Pro rims and Open Countrys are mounted up

Hey @134runner, if it's not too much of a hassle, could you document every single step, every single part number, take pictures and video of every single aspect of the mod… you know if it's not a hassle. ;-)

Seriously, though as a Limited owner, who's never kept anything stock, I'm really looking forward to how this goes and your thoughts on the process. Subscribed!

I too am a 24 Limited owner that would like to do this mod to ditch the OEM chrome running boards. Anyone try @Harringbr99 mod. Would be very interested to hear/see how to do it. Thanks!

I don't get all the hate for the Limited rocker panels. Maybe it's just me but I think they look fine.

Don't hate the rocker panel. Not loving the clunky limited running boards that are needed. Want to put on something more slim looking. Don't think there are any options other than removing/modifying existing rocker.

Anyone know if the trail edition boards will fit with the modification?

The mod my that I and my shop did was to get the rock-sliders that I wanted, making sure they were compatible with X-REAS. (Bud-Built makes the ones I picked. You will need to slightly move the X-REAS lines but not much to fit.) We marked and measured them, then masked them with tape and did a straight cut with an angle grinder, leaving about 1/2" clearance between the plastic rocker and the slider top. I worked with a local shop because it was the first cosmetic mod I'd ever done to the truck. A good fab/offroad shop should be to do that trimming for a reasonable price.

In the link below this guy gives a pretty good run-through of how he did something similar. I prefer them straight across but he left the front curve down. It's your choice how you do it.
