Same But Different (Maybe) 6112 Question

Evening everyone. I have a question about my 6112s. I'm going to post a bit of the back story too...So I apologize in advance for the text wall, but here goes. I installed 6112/5160s on my 18 SR5P Non-KDSS just about a year ago. Originally, when I ordered online, I asked to have the clips set at 4/2 for what I thought would be +1.1" lift. I planned to leave the rear coils stock. Anyway, a buddy and I installed them, and the height was much more than 1.1". A week later I took it into a shop to pay for an hour of labor to have to clips dropped down to 3/1. It was still riding high, but I figured it would settle CLOSE to level and that would be that. Around late spring/early summer my wife and I tramped around Arizona and Utah in the desert on some BLM roads and two tracks, with some big hits to the front. Again, they didn't settle much...at this point I reached out to Bilstein, and after sending photos of parts, they informed me I had the heavy load variant installed (minimum +1.75" lift in the front). 90-ish days put me way to far out of the return window with the company I ordered from to do anything meaningful. I've tried to let it go, but the look drives me crazy having the rear squatted. I'd like to replace the heavy load coils with standard 600lb coils (PN E4-FD1-Z005B50). I'm just a bit worried that the shocks themselves might be tuned differently, and even with lower weight coils, the nose wont drop down like I want it to. If there's anyone that has been in this boat, I would love to hear your advice/suggestions. Thanks in advance!!

As far as I know, the shocks are the same.

I ordered my 6112/5160 from Underdog Motorsports. While there was a hiccup with my order, they seemed very knowledgable and were happy to answer any questions I had. Even so far as to tell me to text any day or time if I had issues with the install. Might be worth a call to them with the idea you'd buy the springs from them after getting clarification for what you're looking to do.

(yes, I'm the same husky guy from reddit).

Lift the rear about an inch and you'll be good. Spacers and/or springs out there that will work.

I received a response late yesterday direct from Bilstein. Basically said the same thing. I was just a but worried about the wheel gap in the rear. Inch and a half or so shouldnt be too dramatic, right, especially once it's loaded with a bike rack, two bikes, and gear?

i think it will look just right. My 4runner has 6112 at 2" clip 6/4 and T13 rear spring with 5100's. Perfect stance to me. DSC_0954.jpg

I think I'm going to go with 1.5" (PN 36-2811824) and call it good.

I ordered the 1.5" B12s from Shock Surplus. Hoping to have my hands on them early this week. Once they're installed, I'll attach a photo to this tread! I spoke with the owner of the shop that's going to be helping me. He said he wouldn't suggest swapping the coils in the front either. Figured with the tuning for heavier springs there could be an off-chance of "sending the valve right through the top of the shock" with the use of a lighter spring. I'll report back soon.

The person at the shop said the internal tuning of the front strut is different with different springs?

I confirmed this with a Bilstein rep, actually. They said "these shocks are designed, tested, and tuned around the heavier weight spring coil. We do not recommend using any other spring with this kit". I figured it was just some sort of liability thing...but the shop owner that's helping me agreed and said that makes sense. So, here we are.

What are the part numbers on the coils currently on your front struts?

Someone or something is not right (or not clear yet).

The part number of yours is different than what I have. Mine is E4-FD1-Z005B50.
I purchased mine new from a Bilstein dealer. Mine match the part number you posted in your first post. The ones you called "Standard Load".

That part number (and mine) also match what Shock Surplus has on it's website as "only to be used on 6112 Front Shocks". According to what you were told by Bilstein, this would be incorrect.

    https://www.suspensionlifts.com/sho...ont-coils-for-6112-kit-shocks-e4-fd1-z005b50/

The part number from yours matches a heavy duty spring (google) as you thought.

Since the pictures of the two vehicles posted above do not exhibit the height issue you posted about (nor does mine), I would assume, they also have the "... 5b50" coils.

I wonder if you have the same model 6112 as I do? Did you buy yours new?

Here is a thread where someone used the same springs as you, but listed the modification as:

I did buy the kit new, and from an authorized dealer. An outfit out of Las Vegas called Rogue Offroad is who I used. I emailed them several days ago, but still haven't heard back. I'm way out of any return/exchange period.

I heard the 6112s went through a redesign. Perhaps this all is related to that.

    How does it ride?

As Aiello mentioned them, Shock Surplus will tell you anything you need to know whether you're buying or just looking for answers, the man I talked to was enjoying the conversation with me he would have talked all day about shocks and suspension if I would have been willing. Great non customer service. I will be shopping with them for sure.

I have the 6/4 clips for a 1.9” lift and the 1.5” B8 springs from Bilstein. Perfection.

Glad you are getting taken care of. Post up some pics when done and maybe post measurements from bottom of fender to middle of hub. This could help some people make lift height decisions in the future. Good luck!

So I spaced getting measurements or photos before I dropped the 4runner off last night. I picked it up this afternoon, and man does it it look better. With a measuring tape, its 22.5" , from the center of the hub to the fender in the front and rear. Damn near dead level.
