Dangerous to Drive with Heavy Springs?

I am impatient, just getting that out there up front and am looking for advice.

I have a lift kit (Ironman 4x4/ 2in rear, 2.5in front) coming in about a week which will be my first major mod to my stock 4runner. Medium springs in back heavy in front because I have a bumper and skid plates (CBI) coming in about 2 months.

Is it dangerous/stupid to have heavy springs in the front without the weight simply because I want to install the suspension/lift now? Will it ride super high and very rough until I add that weight up front?

 

It's going to ride pretty stiff until you get the weight on it.

 

Honest answer? Yes it will likely ride rough and possibly sit too high without the additional weight.

But if its only for two months I would imagine you'll be fine. I wouldn't say its unsafe.

Nah you'll be fine. The stock 4R suspension is severely undersprung and handles like a boat. Stiffer springs will help. What rate are the "heavy" springs? I hope they're are at least 700 lb/in.

That is a great question I'm not sure where to find the answer. They are supposed to still ride at 2.5 inch height with 110-220 pounds of constant weight on them. Does that equate to the "rate" you mentioned?

Well if highway speeds on wet roads are considered, then it is certainly not the best situation. Ideally the tires remain in firm contact w/ the road. Over-sprung chassis can create a skittish flinty kind of ride which isn't conducive to grip. I find that the stock setup isn't the most confidence inspiring w/ no added weight, in low traction conditions. The higher the speed the worse it gets.

 

I would mostly be driving around town till I add the weight and would not be highway driving. But good point, so I would probably just drive another vehicle if the roads get really wet.
