    Hi
My son has a 1993 toyota 4 runner 3l petrol v6 3vz, some wires came out of mass airflow sensor, tried to put back together but would not start. Brought new one off ebay. Will now start and idle bit under load it wants to die. Has changed spark plug leads, distributor. What could this be? Should also mention the maf number is 22250-650010 and they have been discontinued and can not find any that superseded.

What does it idle at before it dies? Should be about 800 rpms.

Honestly, it's probably still a bad MAF. I've heard more than one mechanic say they simply won't deal with any MAF that doesn't come from the dealer. People have gone through 5-6 MAFs before they had a good one.

I would look for a good used looking one off from Ebay or a junkyard with Toyota stickers.

Don't buy aftermarket Mafs, they rarely work. Find a good used OEM one, if there is no active part number it means it's discontinued (not surprising considering the age)

A lot of people who removed the MAF sensor make a common mistake. To remove wire harness, they probably unscrewed MAF harness receptacle screws and yanked it out…thus disconnecting internal wire leads, see pics. You can repair original sensor. Cut through sealant, removed cover, reconnected leads and re-connect connections, re seal with silicone and your good to go. I've even had to re-solder connections and got back to working condition! After market MAF sensors are junk...i've wasted money on two of them. If anything, you will learn about the internal components.
